Focused on math, especially functions, proportions, and geometric figures. I also defined several vocabulary words that appeared in the sentence completions for the reading section. The student completed some reading passages for homework and did phenomenally well, getting perfect scores on two or three of them.
We worked on an English passage that the student had done prior to our meeting and then we spent the remainder of the session landing and writing several essays. The student has developed a strong sense of which topics he is most comfortable working about and he has become very proficient at working those topics into many student prompts to form a very strong essay. The student wants to work more on prompts that he is less comfortable with so I'm going to bring some essay topics that I find online for the next few sessions
We did work from the new SAT practice book that the student bought yesterday. We focused this session on trigonometry. We first focused on the basic principles, like how to find lengths using the Pythagorean theorem. We then moved onto more advanced topics including the unit circle, the law of sins and cosines, and working with secants and co-secants. For homework I had the student do a Level 1 practice test so he could get used to the timing of the test.
The student has already showed improvement in his practice sections that he has been doing for homework; he has been following my suggestions and seeing their worth, i.e. heavily annotating passages, looking for key conjoining words, etc. We still need to do work on his vocabulary skills.
The student and I worked primarily on the Verbal and Writing Sections of the SAT (most specifically the Sentence error parts) and then transitioned into the Math. We were able to complete two full sections together.
The student and I continued our ACT Reading prep by working a practice test together. We also looked a little bit at Science and Math at the student's request.
