New York City Tutoring FAQ

How much does Varsity Tutors cost for students in New York City?

The cost you'll pay for tutoring for students in New York varies depending on your circumstances. For example, a lesson for a high school senior at the Bronx Academy of Letters looking for extensive ACT test prep would likely be a different rate than sessions for an elementary schooler who's running into difficulty with reading.

The number of sessions you take part in can affect the price per session too - regular sessions throughout the term may cost less than a handful of sessions to bone up before you take the MCAT. Our Educational Directors would be happy to help you figure out the best plan for your budget.

The New York City School System

Did you know that New York City is home to more than 1,600 public schools, as well as a number of private schools? As in any city and school district, certain schools offer stronger academic programs, and admission to these schools can be competitive. With almost 900,000 students in public schools alone, navigating the New York City educational system can be stressful.

Online or in-home tutoring can help you or your student stand out from the crowd. Private tutors in New York City can assist with challenging college coursework, difficult elementary school homework assignments, or test prep for exams like the ACT, ISEE, SAT, and SHSAT.

Here's a breakdown of SAT test scores in the city. How does your student measure up?

New York City Test Scores

If your child could use some help preparing for test day, consider the assistance of a New York SAT tutor.

The SHSAT, or Specialized High Schools Admissions Test, is unique to New York City’s specialized high schools. A great score can mean a spot at one of New York City’s top high schools, like the High School for Math, Science, and Engineering at City College or Staten Island Technical High School.

An expert New York City tutor can help students master exam content, learn new test-taking strategies, and build confidence. Eighth and ninth grade students typically take the SHSAT in the fall—generally in October or November.

Note, however, that not all of New York City’s elite high schools require the SHSAT. Curious about which high schools come out on top? Consider this table:

Tonight we stayed on probability. The class' progress was at geometric probability, but she needed practice on regular theoretical probability so she could follow the new material. Once we mastered regular probability, geometric was no big deal.

We covered types of rock and how they form. I showed the student a specific cell cycle diagram and she was able to predict how and why certain types of rocks formed. Then I let the student engage in a few practice problems from an Earth science assessment workbook. She felt comfortable with the material but had trouble interpreting graphs.

Tutoring review by Kathleen in New York City, NY
Today was my first meeting with this student. She plans to take the GRE in December and seems well-prepared in terms of books and time allotment. She has a couple of prep books, one of which is devoted entirely to math problems. She has already started studying and recently completed a short Math practice test. We went over her answers and discussed what areas of Math may need extra attention. I'm really impressed that she's starting to study so early and excited to work with someone who's so motivated!

Had the student do more writing practice, focusing on using similes and metaphors. I then discussed with her why using descriptive words and phrases is beneficial to writing. She seemed to understand it pretty well, and her writing is very good for her age.

We began by reviewing units of measurement. After reviewing, the student and I began practicing how to convert the units. She was able to successfully complete this task after I modeled it for her and walked her through the process a few times.

We briefly went through questions she had on her review packet for her upcoming math test, focusing on adding and multiplying expressions with radicals.
