6th Grade Tutoring FAQ

For many students, sixth grade marks the transition from elementary school to middle school. This shift may also be the first time your child has changed schools, making the process difficult both academically and developmentally. New classrooms, teachers, peers, and expectations can quickly generate the perception of a foreign atmosphere. Resources and assistance that may have been readily available in elementary classes may be reduced or absent in the new, challenging middle school environment. The new schedule in middle school may require that your student shift between teachers for different subjects and periods, giving him or her little sense of the homeroom connection central to elementary education. If your child is struggling with the jump in academic intensity and simultaneous developmental shifts occurring during this year, a sixth-grade tutor may be able to help.

The introduction of multiple teachers and classrooms can also lead to difficulties due to a lack of organizational skills. Being organized may not have been much of an issue in elementary school, but the complexity of new classes, schedules, and teachers make organization extremely important. A private tutor can give your child helpful tips on how to get and stay organized, which is a skill that will help them throughout their academic career and beyond.

When you contact our educational directors, we work to build an academic profile for your student. By taking note of his or her particular strengths and weaknesses, learning habits, academic interests and aspirations, and personality, we are able to create a comprehensive profile that can be used to help you select a compatible tutor. Your child's instructor can then collaborate both with you and your child to develop a sixth-grade tutoring curriculum designed around your specific concerns and your child's interests. Perhaps your child struggles to draft a coherently structured essay, but excels in his or her algebraic competency. Your tutor can dedicate time to custom-tailoring strategies to strengthen this area of weakness, while also introducing advanced concepts to keep your child engaged with the subject matter in which he or she is most interested.

Whether your child feels most comfortable studying in a library, outdoors, or in your home, a tutor can meet them there. Varsity Tutors' live learning platform also enables you and your child to meet with a private tutor face-to-face online. This provides you with a great deal of flexibility because it lets you and your child decide the time and location that works best.

A private tutor can also be helpful in the sense that can give your child as much time as they need to become proficient in a particular subject. If your child is advanced and is moving faster than their peers, a private tutor can be helpful in introducing them to more complex subjects to keep them engaged. Additionally, if your child is struggling, their tutor can spend more time working with a specific subject to ensure that they fully understand it before moving on to a different topic.

Though the transition to middle school can be wrought with challenges, mastering the material presented is a critical step in preparation for success in high school and future education. Sixth grade is often a year of equilibration, during which teachers focus on building a common core of fundamental knowledge that is shared by all students as they pursue coursework in seventh- and eighth-grade classes. These later classes rarely slow down to reestablish this core knowledge, instead working with the assumption of previous mastery. Falling behind early in middle school can have detrimental effects in numerous courses to come. Do not allow your child to become lost in the shift into middle school education. Contact Varsity Tutors for more information about sixth-grade tutoring options. Get help connecting with a tutor and start your child on the road to academic success today.

The student and I worked on studying for an upcoming science exam (earth science). And we completed her math homework on statistics and graphing. She will begin reading the book "Number the Stars" to catch up on the work she missed while being absent from school.

The student and I worked on math and decided to focus on word problems, since he has some trouble converting language into equations. Second hour with his little sister was also math, since she's working through a math book her teacher recommended.

The student is finishing up school and had summer math problems to review. She did well on the majority of questions. We will be practicing these more over the summer. We also reviewed her summer science experiment project and social studies/ELA project; I explained some scientific definitions and we organized how she can structure her writing responses.

We did math and reading comprehension problems from the SSAT review book in order to diagnose and teach the student. I gave him a copy of the test we used so he could work some problems during the week before our next session if he so desired. He basically understands factoring, multiplication, division, and basic geometry. His reading comprehension is good.

Online 6th Grade Tutoring review by Jessica
I worked with the first student on force, motion, and energy. We spent most of the time talking about potential and kinetic energy as well as balanced and unbalanced forces on an object. He has a good understanding of how motion and energy work. During our math review, we worked on arithmetic with decimals. He did very well on addition, subtraction, and multiplication but struggled a little with division as he had not learned it yet. The second student and I also talked about force, motion, and energy. She was able to list all of the types of energy and to talk about examples of each. We mainly talked about mechanical energy and the details of what happens when an object is in motion. For math, we worked with decimals doing addition, subtraction, and multiplication. She was very good at all of it but needed some guidance with multiplication. She did excellent with estimating.
