The student and I met for the first time today at her apartment. We discussed the material that will be on her final and I got a sense for which topics she needs the most assistance with. We started with material from the beginning of the semester- energy and metabolism- and discussed the structure of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins and how they are utilized by the body, especially during exercise.

The student and I had a great session. We covered renal physiology, starting with glomerular function and proceeding to urinary concentration at the loop of Henle. We will move on to the distal tubule, collecting duct, and specific ion reabsorption kinetics, as necessary, before the student's test next week.

Today we went over what to expect for the TEAS test the student will be taking in the fall. We are especially focusing on human anatomy and physiology. She will be enrolled in this class next semester, so we are covering the basics to get her prepared and up to speed. We will use a flash card tool in order to cover anatomy vocabulary terms.

Today was our first session and I thought it went very well! First we went over the demands of the online course as it is very different from the classic lecture & lab combination, and then looked over the timeline of when the student wants to complete her assignments, quizzes, and final. We also went over study "tips" for this online course, such as highlighting what is asked in the open-book quizzes and worksheets so that we know what material is most emphasized on her final. We then spent the rest of the time going over the general concepts that were outlined in the first chapter, and then finally began touching on some chemistry that was outlined in the following chapter. All in all, I believe it was a great session and that we are a good fit! We will meet again next week at the same time (Wednesday, July 24 at 3:30), and we may work for 2 hours if need be.

What is Physiology?

At a broad level, physiology can be thought of as the study of how living organisms and beings function. As you may imagine, this means that a physiologist can study a variety of different things. For example, if you decide to work in the field of physiology you could study something as small as a molecule or as large as a human. This means that there are plenty of different niches within the field of physiology that you could pursue, depending on where your interests draw you.

Physiology is not a new academic subject area. In fact, it's been studied for thousands of years. The history of this subject dates all the way back to at least the 5th Century BCE. It was during this time that ancient societies in Greece, China, and other areas began developing their own understanding of physiology. A few Greek scholars are generally credited with developing the foundation of the modern field of physiology. These famous early physiologists were Hippocrates and Aristotle.

Still, it wasn't until the 1500s that the word "physiology" was actually created. This was done by a French doctor. From there, new findings of the circulation of blood in the 1600s spurned another period of growth for the still-fledgling modern version of the academic subject area. In the 1800s, Ivan Pavlov conducted a group of experiments on dogs and their conditioned responses to further spur growth and development in the field of physiology.

Learning Physiology

Physiology is a relatively advanced scientific subject area. For that reason, students won't typically start studying it until they've already graduated from high school and moved on to college. If you plan on pursuing a physiology degree while in college, then there are a variety of different courses that you can expect to take during this time in your education. For example, you may take a class on anatomy for human physiology or human growth and motor development. You could also take classes on neuroscience, medical sociology, the physiology of aging, and more.

You'll spend time learning about a number of different things during each of the classes that you take in pursuit of your physiology degree. For example, you'll learn about red and white blood cells, along with their compositions and functions. You'll also learn about things like how the human body uses electrolytes and what osmolytes are. These are all topics that you can get help learning more about by signing up to work with physiology tutors. If you find that you're having trouble with one of the topics that you're learning about in your physiology classes, then you may want to work with a private tutor. This is a great way to supplement your classroom learning experience and start making the academic progress that you've been working towards. If you're interested in working with a private physiology instructor, then you can easily get started with one by reaching out to us today.

Still, the specific topics that you learn about will vary some depending on your grade level and the specific scope of your degree program. You could study the inner-workings of intracellular communication, action potential, muscle tissue, kidney function, ion homeostasis versus normal hemostasis, and much more. Developing a strong understanding of the subjects that you study in physiology can be a hard thing to do without any guidance. If you think that you would benefit from having help with your academic pursuits in this subject area, then you may be interested in getting started with physiology tutoring. Consider reaching out to us today if you're interested in this unique educational supplement.

Careers in Physiology

Individuals who make a career out of working in physiology are called physiologists. You can find physiologists in a variety of industries, including healthcare, research, education, and academic writing. The amount of education that you'll need to work as a physiologist in one of these industries will vary based on the level of position that you're interested in having. For instance, if your goal is to become a biomedical scientist, then you'll likely want to work towards getting an advanced degree, such as a doctorate or professional degree. Biomedical researchers will spend their time learning how to prevent and treat diseases and creating and running experiments that are designed to help people improve their health.

You could also be interested in working as an exercise physiologist. These individuals use their unique skills to aid in the exercise process in a number of ways. You could work as an exercise physiologist by aiding in recovery or by helping to improve overall health, body composition, and flexibility. This type of work usually requires at least an undergraduate degree. You may also need an advanced doctorate degree or something similar in order to find the position that you're looking for within the field of exercise physiology.

Another example of the type of career that you can have with an academic background in physiology is physical therapy. You'll likely need an advanced professional or doctorate degree to work in this industry.
