Finnish Tutoring FAQ
Finnish presents a wide array of challenges, and native English speakers may encounter a variety of additional problems due to the many linguistic differences between Finnish and English. For example, unlike English, Finnish is an agglutinative language. This means that it constructs many of its words as combinations of short linguistic units with distinct meanings added to a root word. As a result, a person can construct a Finnish word that translates as a complex English sentence! Many other features of Finnish do not directly correlate with aspects of English, and may thus present stumbling blocks for you if you are a native English speaker. Many characters used in written Finnish are not present in written English, for example, and no future tense is needed as other grammatical features convey the same meaning. In addition to the linguistic challenges Finnish presents, finding effective and efficient instruction can also be difficult.
Formal classes may not be taught in ways that make sense to you. They may rush over topics you find confusing to spend extra time on material you already understand. In a traditional classroom setting, it is nearly impossible for your teacher to spend individual time with you, much less ensure that all students master a subject. This leads to massive gaps in knowledge among you and your classmates. Study groups may not offer you the personal attention you need to answer your questions, and impersonal resources like textbooks and websites may not help your situation either. Have you ever wished that you could sit down with a fluent speaker of Finnish and learn the language with his or her help? Varsity Tutors can help you connect with such personal instruction through one-on-one Finnish tutoring.
Varsity Tutors' educational directors are able to support you in finding your ideal Finnish tutor. When you get in touch, they can work with you to craft a student profile that gives your potential tutors a general idea of what you need. Your profile includes details like your learning style, class syllabus, proficiency, past Finnish education, concerns about the language, goals, and more. Your personal tutor uses these to form a personalized lesson plan that is designed strictly for you. This lesson plan can be a valuable tool in your tutoring as it allows your tutor to track your progress and keep you on the right path to achieve your goals.
Private tutoring can provide you with a learning plan custom-tailored to address the exact aspects of Finnish that give you trouble, while avoiding unnecessary review of concepts you have already mastered. You can work at your natural pace without concern for having to match the pace of a class. Your experienced tutor can act as a conversation partner to help you master spoken Finnish, as well as provide you with written exercises to help you grasp reading and writing in the language. It is common for language tutors to provide a variety of supplemental materials to immerse you in the culture associated with the language, such as music, artwork, current events, history, and more. You may be surprised how much easier it is to learn a language when you are working with a tutor who personalizes their efforts just for you.
Your personal tutor can arrange your sessions around your busy schedule. Recent Finnish Tutoring Session Notes
Today was the student and I's first meeting in two months. We met to help him review for a big test coming up tomorrow. The test consisted of material from the lesson discussing family and family members. His instructor gave him a study guide which we used to review and answer questions. I also gave him some examples based off the study guide. We worked on distinguishing radicals in characters, questions about dialogues, as well as sentence unscrambling. I offered him tips and tricks on how to tackle certain types of questions. Overall, he seems prepared for his exam tomorrow, and I will be checking in to see what his results were.
We began with a quiz on lesson eight, dialogue one. We read through the next dialogue and went over most of the grammar points in lesson eight. We practiced conversing and worked on more translations.
We went over the mid-term review from her book, and she got over 90% correct. We practiced using deduction to choose the correct sentence out of two sentences that need to be matched with a picture. We practiced how to guess the meaning using the words we know. We then went on to practice learning the words and characters with their history for man, woman, and children.
In this class, we started pinyin and I talked about Chinese vowels to her. She enjoyed learning vowels. The student was working hard and I'm surprised she can pronounce most of the vowels after a short period of instruction. We will learn Chinese consonants next class.
We talked about how to make questions in Chinese, and how questions in Chinese are similar or different to questions in English. We talked about Chinese New Year, and the story of the Chinese New Year and the twelve animals making up the Chinese zodiac. She wrote the characters for each of the animals and then practiced having short conversations about animals. Next week, we'll learn some poems in Chinese and talk about "particles," which are short words that go at the end of sentences.
We tried a different structure today. I worked with each student for 30 minutes each. Student A and I practiced writing numbers from 20-30. I also wrote the characters for part of his action routine and quizzed him on the characters. Student B and I went through a pinyin pronunciation sheet that I had with me, practicing tones and proper enunciation. We also went over the characters and pronunciation of the seasons.
