Algebra 2 Tutoring FAQ

Algebra 2 is one of the most important math courses in a student's high school career. For many students, it will be the highest-level math course they take in high school. Algebra 2 also factors prominently on both the SAT and the ACT, and actually represents the most advanced concepts on the SAT. The ACT includes trigonometry, while the SAT does not. Students apply concepts they learn in Algebra 2 in their high school chemistry courses, and the material is also essential for high school physics.

Success, skill, and confidence in Algebra 2 are essential in college for students who pursue a course of study in math, science, or engineering. In addition, non-STEM majors will also implement a vast array of the class concepts. Social sciences such as economics and psychology require many of the graphing skills that a student learns in Algebra 2, as well as the ability to create functions, simplify expressions, and solve equations.

The student and I worked on a final review of his algebraic concepts--including quadratic equations, conic sections, logarithms, inequalities, and graphing--as well as looking back at trigonometric identities one last time. As usual, he had very little struggle. I also helped him develop a few time-saving strategies for the multiple-choice questions on his exam.

With her Algebra 2 final coming up, the student wanted to review some concepts that she didn't understand. This math was a little beyond SAT math, but still useful as practice. We have 1 more session scheduled before the SAT.

We reviewed topics for the student's Algebra 2 final. We first focused on problems which involved fractional exponents. Afterwards, we worked with the basic algebra 2 functions emphasizing domain and range. We also worked on problems which required finding the least common denominator, factoring, and grouping of algebraic fractions. She was well prepared for the topics we covered, and should be set for her exam tomorrow.

The student continues to work through conical sections work in her Algebra II class. We focused on working both forwards and backwards through equations for parabolas, hyperbolas, circles and ellipses, how to calculate foci, vertices, center-points, inflection points, axes, and intercepts. She shows good facility with the sort of reasoning involved in these types of problems, and I believe she will do well on her exam in this section.
