If you are interested in learning Latin, taking a Boulder Latin course with Varsity Tutors could be just what you need to get started. Whether you are interested in learning Latin as a new hobby, taking a college class at the University of Colorado-Boulder, or even taking a high school class at Boulder High School, a Latin class can meet your needs.
It can be an intimidating experience to take up a new language, even if you already know a few concepts. You might feel even more intimidated if learning in a traditional classroom is not your favorite way to learn. One of the most important aspects to mastering a new language is having time to practice using the language. If you decide to take a Boulder Latin course, you will be given plenty of opportunities to practice speaking and writing Latin in a learning environment led by a knowledgeable instructor.
The Latin language was founded in central Italy, where Rome is located. The Romance languages, including Romanian, Italian, French, Portuguese, and Spanish, come from Latin roots. Division in the Latin language began to form when the Romans started developing literature. There are two types of Latin: Classical and Vulgar. Classical Latin was more formal and elegant. It was also influenced by Greek in grammar, vocabulary, and style. Vulgar Latin was a popular form of spoken language. The Romance languages came from Vulgar Latin. Many soldiers and colonists spoke Vulgar Latin in the Roman Empire. Vulgar Latin lacks the elegance and formality that is in Classical Latin.
Latin is a dead language, meaning no society uses Latin as their spoken language. Latin was a living language in the Middle Ages and in the early modern period. Attempts were made in the 17th century to restore Latin, but the attempts failed as vernacular languages like English, Italian, and French rose in popularity. As society changed, Latin was used less and less. Once the 19th century came along, vernacular languages took over entirely. Latin survived in Vatican City, where it is the official language, and Latin is also the official language of the Roman Catholic church. The roots of Latin still serve as the basis of terms in science and technology as well. Even though Latin is considered to be a dead language, the Roman alphabet is still used today. Many popular languages, like English, use it. The Roman alphabet used to only have 23 letters. They did not use v, w, or j.
There are still many reasons for Latin to be studied. Parts of the language are still used in legal studies, medicine, theology, and scientific research. If you have a job in these areas or aspire to someday, studying Latin can help boost your credentials. Latin is also a great starter language, as lots of other languages stem from Latin. Taking a Boulder Latin course could help you gain skills in Latin.
What will a Boulder Latin course cover?
A wide variety of different topics will be covered in your Boulder Latin course. Many Latin learners find it easy to learn how to pronounce words. This is because many English words originate from Latin. Some Latin words are even identical to English words. For example, the Latin word "rapidus" means "rapid", the Latin word "finis" means "to finish", and the Latin word "affirmo" means "to affirm". As you can probably tell, these words are very similar.
One concept that can be hard for English speakers to understand is inflection. The endings of words, or inflections, are necessary to understand the relationship of words to each other and, therefore, to discern the meanings of sentences in Latin. This can be hard for English speakers because, in English, the order of words is used to understand what is happening in a sentence. For example, the sentence "The mom is driving the children" is different than "The children are driving the mom". Latin language learners will need to know to look at the end of sentences to know the meaning instead of at the word order. Some other topics of discussion are common phrases, Latin history, and much more. With a Boulder Latin class, you will have access to the information you need to learn Latin.
How will a Boulder Latin class help me learn?
If you decide to take a Boulder Latin class, you will see firsthand how convenient and engaging the classes are. When you take a Latin class, you will learn from an expert instructor, alongside classmates that will be with you in real time. All of our classes are held online in a virtual classroom, which provides you with the best parts of a traditional class like discussions and opportunities to speak and write the language. This allows you to expand your Latin skills. You will also be able to work together with your fellow classmates on ideas you may not totally understand. Learning from classmates can be a fun way to learn new information.
Plus, if you still do not quite understand a topic, you can always ask your instructor for help. You can request to have one-on-one time with them. This is a great time for you to take advantage of your teacher's expertise, especially if you feel like you are behind.
Latin classes are also convenient because you will have the opportunity to choose from many sessions. New classes start on a monthly basis and you can choose between two-week and four-week classes. Plus, the convenience of online classes can't be beaten. Since you attend classes virtually, you can skip the hassle of commuting through traffic and struggling to find a parking place - just open up your laptop, and you're there.
How can I sign up for a class?
If you want to enroll in a Boulder Latin class or learn more, contact Varsity Tutors either online or on the phone. Our educational consultants can answer any questions you may have about scheduling, the topics a class might cover, and more. We look forward to hearing from you!
