Varsity Tutors can connect medical school applicants who are preparing to take the MCAT with a Miami MCAT tutor or a Miami MCAT prep course with just one call. We know that the Medical College Admission Test can be daunting, and getting some help ahead of time can take some of the pressure off. That's why we're here.
The MCAT is an exam that is required for admission at medical schools across the United States, including the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine and the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. It is also required at many medical schools in Canada. This standardized test is delivered via computer and consists of 230 multiple choice questions in four different sections. You'll have five separate results when your test is scored: one for each content section and a combined total score. It is important to do your very best on your MCAT because this test is a factor in determining which schools will admit you into their programs. It's also important to apply within three years of taking your MCAT, because many schools won't accept scores that are older than three years.
What might I see and do in Miami MCAT prep sessions?
The sections in the MCAT include Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems; Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems; Psychological, Social and Biological Foundations of Behavior, and Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills. You can expect to be seated for the test for approximately 7.5 hours. Let's start with the Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems section.
The Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems section consists of 59 questions. You'll have 95 minutes to complete them. There are 10 passage-based sets of questions with 4-6 questions per passage, and 15 independent questions. This section explores your knowledge of how cells and organ systems act independently and work together, how organisms and cells maintain a constant internal environment, how they acquire materials and energy, and how they respond to the environment, among other topics. Questions focus on general and organic chemistry, introductory biology, and basic biochemistry.
In the Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems section, there are 59 questions. You'll be given 95 minutes to answer these questions, which are broken into 10 passage-based sets of questions with up to six questions per set, and 15 independent questions. This section is meant to examine what you know and understand about the tissues of the human body, organs and organ systems, chemical and physical principles of living systems. Questions focus on your knowledge of general, inorganic, and organic chemistry; introductory physics, introductory biology, and basic biochemistry.
The Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior section has 59 questions, with 10 passage-based sets of questions with up to 6 questions to answer for each, and 15 independent questions. This section focuses on skills you'll need to know to serve a diverse population, social issues in medicine, and how behavior can affect health. It tests your knowledge of how people think of themselves and others, the influence of cultural and social well-being that affects people's overall health; and the relationships between social stratification, access to resources, and well-being.
There are 53 questions as part of the Critical Analysis and Reasoning skills section. You'll be given 90 minutes to read nine passages and answer up to seven questions per passage. Evaluators use this section to investigate how much you know about the basic components of a text, how well you can bring components together to increase your understanding, and several other areas. Questions in this section focus on your verbal reasoning skills, analytical skills, and how well you can understand and extract meaning from what you read.
What can I get out of Miami MCAT preparation?
If a group learning environment is appealing to you, we can help you enroll in a Miami MCAT prep course. If you want private tutoring, we can connect you with a Miami MCAT tutor. Both methods have benefits, and sometimes, students find it is helpful to use both methods. At Varsity Tutors, we can help you find the instruction model that suits you best.
When you take part in a Miami MCAT prep class, you'll interact with others who are studying the same topics you are. Some people prefer the energy in a classroom environment, which allows you to engage in discussions and learn from others' experiences or share study tips. Studying with others can help you learn more about the topics you struggle with. For example, if you struggle with Critical Analysis and Reasoning, group work and discussions with others studying the same material may make it easier to understand. It doesn't matter where you are located, because you'll attend class over the internet. You can take your classes wherever you're comfortable, as long as you have internet access, and you can choose from classes that last two weeks or four. There are new sessions beginning each week, so there's no worrying about joining a class that's already in progress.
Spending time with a Miami MCAT tutor brings you the kind of attention you may not get in a group setting, right from the very first session. A private instructor can get to know you and your goals, the topics you find difficult and those you understand, and how you feel you learn best. Next, they may design a study plan focusing on the content you struggle with, all while giving you insights about what you could experience on the MCAT. If you find that you're moving through some material quickly and struggling with other topics, they can easily rearrange the subjects. That means if you're struggling with the Psychological, Social and Biological Foundations of Behavior section, they can focus on that section.

I am a biology graduate from the University of Texas at Austin and after having worked for two years, realized I missed the joy of being a student! I am currently studying to take my MCAT in January and look forward to sharing all of my science knowledge through tutoring. I look forward to sharing the tips and tricks that helped me succeed in high school and college.... Motivation has a lot to do with a sense of accomplishment. This sense of accomplishment is different for every person. Some require an A+, others would like to see their score go up by a letter grade. I like to help my students identify their own goal, show them how they are progressing, and make sure they realize how great their progress is. When students feel motivation, they are more likely to keep up with the material, study independently, and reach out when they need help!
