What can Denver ACT prep cover?
Broken down into four sections, including English, Math, Reading, and Science, the ACT will challenge your test-taking skills and foundational subject knowledge. You will also have the option of completing a writing section. Without the writing section, you will have just shy of three hours to complete all the questions in the four required sections. If you opt to complete the writing section, you will have an extra 40 minutes of test time. The breadth of the ACT necessitates a wide range of expertise across multiple subjects. Here we will break down the different sections of the test to give you a better idea of the different topics you will face.
In the Math section, you will be tested on pre-algebra, elementary and intermediate algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. You will have 60 minutes to complete 60 questions. It is important to have a strong grasp of mathematical concepts, such as functions, interpreting equations, and geometric calculations, among others. Advanced test-taking skills can help you work efficiently and confidently in this section to ensure that you are able to finish in the time allotted.
The English section will measure your understanding of English and your knowledge of language skills. You will have 45 minutes to complete 75 questions, so it is important to work quickly. Fluency in sentence structure, grammar, style, and tone are integral to your success in this section as you will be given opportunities to edit and revise provided text.
Next, the Science section will ask you to complete 40 multiple-choice questions that measure your interpretation, analysis, evaluation, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. You have 35 minutes to complete this section. This portion of the exam might present you with graphs, charts, or experiment summaries. The ability to understand and interpret data utilizing the scientific method will allow you to exceed in this section.
The reading portion of the exam measures your reading comprehension by asking you to analyze content commonly encountered in first-year college courses. You will have 35 minutes to complete 40 questions in which you will be asked to read and analyze passages in order to answer multiple-choice questions. In order to properly analyze the given passages, you must be able to identify central ideas and themes, summarize ideas, differentiate between facts and opinions, and make connections between different texts, among other things.
The optional writing section provides you with 40 minutes to write an essay in response to a prompt that presents an issue and three different perspectives on the issue. To write a successful response, you must coherently state your own perspective while analyzing the connections between your perspective and one of the three perspectives provided. It is important to develop original ideas and arguments in order to provide a thoughtful critique.
