Tutoring review by Grace in Raritan, NJ
We spent the first half of the session going over the math practice test we worked on, and filling in content gaps in trigonometry and logs. We went over the graphs of trigonometric functions in detail, and worked through a few practice problems. Then we moved on to science, where we talked about how to effectively skim and actively read a passage in order to be able to answer the questions most effectively and quickly. We practiced skimming and "underlining" on a practice test, and also used practice passages to work on the conflicting viewpoints part of the test. Next week we will apply these same active reading skills to the reading section.

We worked on student's homework about LCM and GCF. The student is good at the calculation. She usually knows the answer if she could take the time to see what the question is really asking for. We worked some addition and subtraction questions on negative numbers. We also worked a few questions on material from a family friend.

Tutoring review by Jessica in Raritan, NJ
The student and I focused mostly on math today, reviewing a homework assignment on factoring. He was able to finish most of the problems, and I believe he was set up to succeed on the final three. He has not fully internalized the process, but he was able to go through problems much more quickly than previously. My hope is that with additional practice (both with me and his teacher), he will be able to improve. Before diving into math, we checked his assignments from last night. He had done 3/4 of the assignments and had started the fourth. I'm looking forward to seeing him next Monday and getting back into our three meetings a week rhythm!

Tutoring review by Gita in Raritan, NJ
We started out by reviewing the writing assignment that I had given the student, comparing and contrasting the protagonist's attitude towards New York and ballet in Sugar Plum Ballerinas. We completed the last part of the assignment together since she had trouble understanding it. We will continue to work on her spelling and punctuation (in this case, apostrophes), and I noticed that she occasionally forgets to add a word (usually short, common words such as 'is'), so I instructed her to pay close attention when she is writing. We also talked about taking her ideas one step further whenever she writes; usually I ask her to elaborate orally, then instruct her to write down what she told me. For homework, I told her to read the next chapter of Sugar Plum Fairies. We also continued working on verbs and particularly verb tenses in her workbook.

Tutoring review by Kwaku in Raritan, NJ
Today was the first session that I have had with this student. He is a very smart student, much smarter than I had expected. He is such a bright student and a very nice young boy. We were working on middle school math and covering specifically some basic algebra and then geometry. He did not struggle at all with anything that I put in front of him. He was able to answer all the problems by solving them by hand and was diligent with his work. He has a great attitude towards the material and even states that math is his favorite subject. I was able to teach him a few new tips about the area and perimeter of shapes in our time. I look forward to meeting with him again next week.
