Varsity Tutors offers a Charlotte Latin class for all schedules and skill levels: high school sophomores at Myers Park High School, graduate students at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and nontraditional students are all encouraged to sign up for a course. Learning a new language poses a unique set of challenges, especially when balancing a full school schedule, extracurricular activities, and part-time jobs. The format of traditional classrooms may not provide all the support that students need to meet their language learning goals. A Charlotte Latin course provides students with extra help and can assist in increasing comprehension of Latin's concepts.

During the age of the Roman Empire, which lasted over a thousand years, Latin was widely spoken throughout Europe. As the Roman Empire grew, Latin was carried outside of Rome by traveling colonists and soldiers. Romance languages, therefore, all share Latin as their root, since they all descended from areas that were once under Roman rule. Portuguese, Spanish, French, and Italian are examples of Romance languages. Since these languages share Latin as a linguistic root, all Romance languages operate similarly, and learning Latin can prepare students to learn additional languages with more ease.

Though Latin is no longer spoken in modern times, its features still exist in many of the most common languages. Latin vocabulary is used in fields such as government, medicine, theology, law, and the sciences. For example, the Latin term "E Pluribus Unum" is the national motto of the United States. It translates to "out of many, one." Learning Latin, in addition to being a gateway for students to learn other languages, can increase your ability to understand the Latin words used in day-to-day life.

No matter your motivation for studying Latin, Varsity Tutors can provide you with a course that meets your needs. Charlotte Latin courses, which are entirely online, are offered at a variety of times to fit any busy schedule. Students can set up one-on-one time to meet with the instructor if learning in the collaborative group environment does not meet all their needs. Varsity Tutors connects students with a knowledgeable instructor and other Latin students of various skill levels.

What might I learn in a Charlotte Latin course?

Latin is the linguistic root of Romantic languages such as Spanish, French, and Italian. Like these Romantic languages, Latin distinguishes nouns by genders, of which there are three options:

· neuter, such as "nomen" for name

· masculine, such as "miles" for soldier

· feminine, such as "regina" for queen

Memorizing the genders of nouns is just one concept instructors may cover in a Charlotte Latin course. In addition, classes also review sentence structure, pronunciation, and vocabulary. Many English verbs highly resemble their Latin counterparts. For example, "affirmo" translates to "I affirm" and "finis" translates to "finish" or "end". Furthermore, the Roman alphabet contains 23 of the 26 letters found in the English alphabet, making spelling simpler for English speakers that choose to learn Latin.

Though Latin has most of the same letters as English, Latin sentences are more concise than English sentences. Inflections are the cause of this characteristic. Inflections are found at the end of Latin words, and a word's inflection is central to its meaning and function in a sentence. By changing the inflection, a writer or speaker changes the translation of that word. In order to understand what a word means and how it relates to other words in the sentence, the proper translation of the inflection is crucial. English, on the other hand, uses word order to determine meaning. Compare the sentences in the following example. If you were to say, "That cat is chasing the mouse," you would not mean the same thing as if you said, "The mouse is chasing that cat." Changing the order of words in English changes the meaning, but this is not the case for Latin.

Latin sentences rely on inflections to determine meaning, and because of inflections, Latin words frequently translate into multiple English words. For example, "amabunt" translates to "they will love." But the passive form "amabuntur" translates to "they will be loved." Both verbs stem from the verb "amo", but their definitions change based on what is included in the inflection.
