The GRE is a skills-based standardized test that is administered in more than 160 countries worldwide. If you are applying to the University of Miami, Miami University, or another graduate program at your preferred school, then you might be interested in learning how Varsity Tutors could help you with Miami GRE prep. The GRE examination is accepted by thousands of colleges and universities and is commonly used to evaluate potential graduate program candidates. It takes around 3 hours and 45 minutes to complete and is a computer-based test in most parts of the world.

What does Miami GRE prep cover?

The GRE has three sections: Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning.

The Analytical Writing portion of the GRE has two individual tasks that take 30 minutes each. Test-takers will be presented two writing prompts. One will be issue-based and the other will be structured around an argument. You will need to plan and write a response clearly while minimizing errors. The purpose of these prompts is to analyze a student's ability to articulate complex concepts and provide appropriate amounts of supporting ideas. It is also meant to highlight your command of written English, so it is important that there are no grammatical errors within the piece.

The Verbal Reasoning also has two section sections that each consist of twenty questions. This portion of the exam focuses on reading comprehension. You will have to read a passage and evaluate the meaning of the passage by answering questions relating to the text. These passages can range from one to multiple paragraphs in length, and there are commonly ten passages per exam.

After working through each passage, you will need to answer an assortment of questions regarding what you just read. The skills that are assessed in this section are to show your ability to understand the meaning of individual words and sentences, work on summarizing a passage of text, and draw conclusions based on the information presented.

Just like the Verbal Reasoning questions, Quantitative Reasoning is broken down into two sections of twenty questions each. When you reach the segment of the exam, you will be measured for your ability to know and utilize basic math skills and concepts, implement logical reasoning, and problem-solve using quantitative methods. The primary content addresses problems based on arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis.

The questions on this section of the GRE are more prone to ask you to make quantitative comparisons and utilize logic to answer multiple-choice questions. This comes with the additional challenge of having more than one right answer for some multiple-choice questions.

In addition to the sections we have covered up to this point, you may also be faced with an Experimental or Research section during your exam. While these sections will not affect your score, you will still need to prepare for them if you wish to perform well. The Experimental section will not be identified and will be presented within the Verbal or Quantitative Reasoning portion of your exam. The Research section is optional to all students and will take place at the end of the test.
