7th Grade Writing Tutoring FAQ
As students progress through middle school, one of their most challenging endeavors is learning to think critically and put effort into their work beyond the simple task of getting it done. An area where many seventh-grade students have trouble adding depth and maturity to their work is in their writing. Writing well in seventh grade is a challenge for many and can be frustrating for both students and parents. This includes writing with depth, detail, and thought, as well as proper grammar and syntax. To truly unlock the writing potential of seventh-grade students, a little extra assistance may be necessary. Fortunately, Varsity Tutors can help you connect with many excellent seventh-grade writing tutors across the country who are ready and willing to help.
Private tutoring allows your student to receive the personalized attention he or she may be lacking in school. Seventh-grade students write at many different levels, and the individual strengths and weaknesses of each seventh-grader can be drastically different. Your child's seventh-grade writing tutor can meet with them, diagnose his or her strengths and weaknesses as a writer, and then design an individualized plan to build on the skills your child already has while addressing the areas where he or she may need improvement. Their classroom teacher may not be able to give them the type of individual attention they need, but a private tutor can. They can provide your child with the opportunity to move at their own pace and ensure that your child fully grasps a topic before moving on to a new and different one.
There are many areas of seventh-grade writing where your student may need help. These can include basic grammar and syntax, word choice, sentence structure and fluency, the use of descriptive details, critical analysis, or any number of other things. Some students have trouble coming up with ideas, some have trouble organizing their ideas, and some have trouble executing their ideas properly, even after organizing them. Experienced tutors are skilled at recognizing difficulties in all of these areas. They can act as a mentor and help guide your child through the entire writing process. Individualized writing tutoring can help your student not only improve in these areas, but develop a love for writing that will be helpful through all of middle school and beyond.
Many students do not enjoy writing because it can be a lengthy and difficult process. But a skilled and experienced tutor can help your child become a better writer, which will expedite the process and make it more enjoyable. Writing is beneficial for numerous reasons. It is a necessary part of just about every academic subject. It can also be helpful because it can enable your child to express themselves in a way they otherwise may not be able to. A private tutor can also be there to provide your child with encouragement when they are having trouble. Whether they are having a hard time getting started or hit a wall partway through an essay, a private tutor can provide the encouragement they need to keep pushing through it.
Whether your child prefers to study at home or at another location, your child's tutor can make sessions easy and convenient by meeting you wherever and whenever works best for you. Varsity Tutors' live learning platform even allows you and your child to meet a private tutor face-to-face online. This lets you choose the time and place where your child feels most comfortable. Call Varsity Tutors today. Our educational directors would be happy to speak with you about how we can help you connect with a top-quality writing tutor for your seventh-grader.

Recent 7th Grade Writing Tutoring Session Notes
We worked on some of his history homework, which included geography and brainstorming an Aztec poem. We then worked on some writing skills, such as paragraph revision and reading an article/responding.
The student and I continued our writing practice. He continues to be very diligent about doing his writing homework, and I feel his grasp of the mechanics of writing are also improving. We spent most of our time revising a story we had written at our last session and drafting a short answer response to a question he could be asked in a school interview. The student is very thoughtful, and I felt the answer he came up with was both strong and a good reflection of him as a person. He still needs work on including descriptive language and varying his sentence structure, but we'll continue to work on that.
We picked a topic that is of interest to the student (fishing) and I taught him how to outline an essay since this seems like a tool that would be very helpful to him. Then, we wrote an essay from our outline to see how well it worked for him.
I spent the hour with the student going over his extra credit writing assignment on altruistic and malevolent characters. He was struggling the most with transitional words and using quotes to support his argument. I did not leave him with any extra practice, and have no concerns from this session.
During this session we worked on completing the novel that the student was reading. I noticed he was very attentive, asked questions, and made comments during our reading. This show great improvement in his comprehension skills.
The student's writing assignment was to write about a friend. She wrote the requested five sentences. Her writing is clean and clear. I talked with her about how to make the language more specific. For example, she used the adjectives "nice" and "helpful" so we made a chart of those words and then we discussed examples of those behaviors. Making lists of examples gave the student sentences she could use to particularize her essay about her friend. She rewrote her essay using these new sentences. She's very smart and listens well. She wrote a new essay with no spelling, grammar or punctuation errors. I showed her how to use the colon.
