Tutoring review by Kalie in Wilmington, DE
We went over the questions that she missed on the math sections of her SSAT diagnostic test to make sure she knew the concepts. She did very well on these, but as we moved to the reading comprehension it was obvious that she needs more assistance in that area. I gave her a few worksheets that go over the math skills we focused on so that she can be as confident as possible about her skills. For our next session, I plan to go over the missed questions on the verbal section of her test and practice those needed skills.

The student and I reviewed several topics for her comprehensive final exam, including ionic v. covalent bonds, polarity, gas laws, and thermo-chemistry. She has come a long way since the beginning of the year, both in chemistry knowledge and in self-confidence about her scientific talents! She is looking forward to taking AP Chemistry II next year. I will miss working with her!

This week, the student and I worked through problems involving kinetics. We discussed how to tell what the order of reaction is and also completed problems using experimental data to find the rate law. In addition, we worked on problems involving solving for the rate constant, using the half-life equations, and determining what quantity of a substance remains after a given amount of time.

The student worked on his homework packet: penmanship, subtraction (perfect), reading and comprehension: The Man Who Gave the First Shot - Louis Pasteur, and More or Less than a Pound. I gave him a practice spelling test: he missed only four words, Australia, Italy, attract, machine, which he wrote 5 times each. He read 4th grade readers: Storm Chasers by Alice Cary (p16).

Tutoring review by Ryan in Wilmington, DE
Today we covered aromatic compounds, alcohols, and ethers. We talked about the physical properties, the formation, and reactions of these organic compounds. The student understands the material well. She has no problems comprehending the concepts I am explaining. I can tell she has them in the back of her mind, and she just needs to be reminded of them. She took a practice test on Monday. I advised her to spend some time reviewing her test. Once she understands her thought processes, she will be able to better know how to address her timing problem.

Tutoring review by Kim in Wilmington, DE
Today we focused on the math and ability sections. Overall he is very bright. He needs to check over his work and read carefully. Many times he is able to self-correct. I timed him on various sections and he was able to finish with a few minutes left each time. He did very well on the ability portion. We also reviewed vocabulary. Some of the words were his former vocab words from school. We discussed different strategies for the verbal sections.
