Tutoring review by Andrew in Wildwood, MO
During this session we worked through the Chapter 9 Self-Assessment in preparation for an exam on Friday. The student had a better handle on the material than when we worked together on Tuesday. By the end of the session, the student felt fairly confident in his ability to solve the problems for the test on Friday. One area that we struggled a bit on was modeling the real world word problems into algebraic equations, and then solving them using the logarithmic techniques that he learned.

Tutoring review by Shivalika S. in Wildwood, MO
The student and I worked on mean, median, and mode. First we started with reviewing the problems he was assigned for homework from last week and worked the ones he had trouble answering. Then, we discussed problems about mean in his math workbook. He was able to get most answers right but had a little trouble for two complex problems which we went over together. We worked on figuring out the answer intuitively before even solving the problem so that he knows whether the answer is right or wrong. For example, in one of the problems the mean (average) of 99 students on a test was 82. The question then asked us for the mean for 100 students if the last student made a 99 on the test. We looked at the number 99 that the student made and said that the mean (average) would increase but only slightly because one 99 is not enough to increase the mean of 82, significantly. Then, we reviewed the problem and found that indeed, our predication was correct because the mean only increase by a few decimal points. I assigned few problems for him to work on his own. I also told him to review the vocabulary of the terms and what they mean. Then we reviewed what median and mode meant since he will be working on that in class this week so overall, he should be slightly ahead of the class. I will be quizzing him on mean, median, and mode at the end of our session when we meet next week but he doesn't know that. I want it to be a pop quiz to monitor his progress to see how much information he is retaining from our sessions. I think he might need two sessions per week to cover all the material since we were are only able to cover one section from his chapter. Last week we worked on chapter 9 but we were only able to cover one section and he moved on to chapter 10 this week so we covered that material instead of finishing chapter 9.

Tutoring review by Mary Theresa in Wildwood, MO
The student and I covered the area and perimeter of shapes as well as right triangle similarity in preparation for her test this week. First, we went over the area and perimeter, noting useful formulas like (d^2)/2 for the area of a square and bh for the area of a parallelogram. Then, we went over right triangle similarities where one triangle was inscribed inside of the other (sharing the vertex of the 90 degree angle). She had a little difficulty with the common 30 60 90 rules like 1:rad3:2, so her best strategy here is often to just use the Pythagorean theorem to arrive at the length of the side.

Today we did our last review for his final tomorrow. We went over some formulas for volume, talked about conversion factors for one, two and three dimensions and how those work. It was a day of general review, we covered everything we had covered so far, just much more quickly.

Tutoring review by Alicia in Wildwood, MO
Today was my first meeting with both students as they prepare to take the GRE in early November. We discussed the general structure of the test, and they practiced writing timed responses for the issue essay task in the analytical writing portion of the test. We went through their sample essays together, and briefly went over a few stylistic points that will be looked for on that section. I will look more closely at their samples over the next few days and give them both a tentative numerical score. I sent both a list of prompts for the second type of writing task on the test (argument), and they will both complete a timed sample for me to review before our next session. We went over the strategy of studying common Latin/ Greek roots as a way to prepare for the verbal section as a whole, particularly with helping to parse the meanings of difficult vocabulary words that they might come across on exam day. We have arranged to spend the next couple of sessions focusing on math review, and they will send over a list of concepts/ topics that they want extra review on. After reviewing math, we will then move on to reviewing the verbal portion, or adjust as necessity dictates.

Tutoring review by Samuel in Wildwood, MO
This session focused on implicit differentiation as well as the chain rule and algebraic manipulation of expressions. The aim of this session was to establish a method for breaking down the current material into smaller pieces, so they would be easier to manage. The student has some of the fundamental concepts down, but needs to review some of the material that has been presented in this course as well as some of the trigonometry that is presenting in this course. The student was advised to make flashcards to help with areas that have opportunity for improvement. Overall, our first session went well and I believe she did well with the explanations she was given. The student will bring her last exam to our next session for further review and to better establish what the areas of concern are in the course.
