We covered fractions, decimals, and powers of ten from the student's workbook, with additional practice from an online website. This was the first time the student practiced decimals. He picked them up quickly, but had some trouble understanding powers of ten. As we practiced, he started to get it more. He is enthusiastic about math and catches his mistakes.

We reviewed exponential functions. We discussed its meaning; looked at how the function changes in a graph. We reviewed the components of the equation. We went over practice problems for an upcoming mechanics of materials test on Wednesday. Problems included topics of shear stress, moments, and internal forces for various beams and elements. The student did well understanding the concepts and we worked through a few tough problems that challenged us both. On a side note, he did well on his last thermodynamics exam.

Tutoring review by Efrem in Sunset Hills, MO
The student wanted to go over his homework assignment on identifying, balancing, and constructing reactions. We reviewed the assignment in one hour, employing a systematic approach based on identifying compounds (based on valences); balancing atoms, elements, and compounds (by doing metals, other elements, and oxygen in that order); and then identifying the type of reaction. This approach took half as long as he expected. Then, he will begin to study the basic parts of the lab experiment scheduled for tomorrow. We discussed some of the probable questions that will be studied in the experiment.

Tutoring review by Lois Agatha in Sunset Hills, MO
We were still on the chapter on polynomials. This time we studied factoring trinomials, multiplying binomials, taking roots of monomials, and solving equations with radical expressions. After a few practice problems, factoring became a piece of cake for the student. Taking the roots of a monomial was a little tricky at first, but she eventually understood the concept. As for solving equations with radical expressions, she only needed to know how to get rid of the radical sign, then solving was easy for her.
