Tutoring review by Ashley in Mequon, WI
We covered numerical and written expressions and how to convert one to the other. The student continues to struggle with slowing down but he is able to articulate when he needs more time to think. His homework is to look at his grade on the homework he completed today after his teacher grades it so that we can continue our practice problems. If he gets positive reinforcement that he is capable of completing problems successfully, despite past mistakes, I think he can be a very successful student with high grades.

Tutoring review by Daniella in Mequon, WI
Today the students wanted to do the review their teacher had assigned them covering grammar. Prior to us doing the review, we went over concepts that we previously had not done together, but they said they had covered on their own. They are readily identifying verbs, subject, and objects. I am trying to get them to not only provide correct answers, but also explain why their incorrect answers are wrong. This will aid in complete understanding. I am very impressed with the progress they have made with identifying parts of speech. Originally they had great difficulty, but now they are starting to see how sentences fit together. Once we covered direct objects, indirect objects, and objective complements (we did this by asking the questions of "what or whom?" or "to what or for whom?"), we covered the types of sentences. I had them provide several examples to me about these types of sentences. Then we worked on the review. I feel they have more success when they are not engaged in a book or a worksheet and instead focus on me orally delivering the review questions. This way they are able to determine issues organically rather than being prompted from a book. We were able to finish the review, and I am trying to get them to explain to one another how to solve problems. I truly think the best way to learn something is to teach it to someone, so when one of them gets an answer wrong, I have the other explain why. This way they feel more engaged with one another during the sessions. Overall, I see a great improvement in this session with their attentiveness and willingness to learn.

Tutoring review by Candice in Mequon, WI
Today the student and I covered exponential growth and decay functions and an introduction to logarithms. This was all new to him and he got the gist of it. Identifying the domain and range of the equations was a bit tricky for him. We will have to work on that some more. He had a great attitude as always.
