Tutoring review by Tiffany in Sussex, WI
We covered grammar lessons 1,2,3,4, and 7 in preparation for the student's test. We reviewed the four types of sentences: declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory. We also reviewed subjects, predicates, simple sentences, and compound sentences. We did practice review exercises both from the textbook and made our own example sentences. The student understands all the grammar points and seems very confident in her understanding. I left her with some tasks to do In order to prepare for her coming social studies test. She should make note cards containing the key terms, dates, and concepts from her chapter reading. Also, after reading through the chapter, summarize main points in each section in the chapter. Lastly, she should pose questions about the reading to check to comprehension.

Tutoring review by Meghan in Sussex, WI
This was my first session with the student, so part of the time was spent getting to know each other. I looked over some math worksheets she was already working on. I then gave her 25 3rd grade appropriate multiplication problems to work on - "fast facts" - utilizing numbers between 0-12. This was to get an assessment of her basic math skills. We reviewed a trick for memorizing multiplication by 9. The student also worked on a multiplication chart worksheet, a fractions worksheet, and a double digit multiplication worksheet. She grasps multiplication conceptually and only needs to work on memorization, "mind math." Then we moved on to reading. I asked the student to read a short paragraph for a fluency assessment. We changed texts so that I could get a better understanding of her fluency and she read from Bad Kitty. Her fluency is great and she easily works through sounding out more difficult words and fitting them into sentences with good prosody.

Tutoring review by John in Sussex, WI
More than anything this time we worked on trying to use examples and quotations from selections the student had read in class to write an essay about a Puritan value. The student selected the value and some examples and then went to work writing. I reminded him how to introduce quotations and explain their background before putting them in a paper. I also wanted him to not worry about making his papers perfect on his first run through. It is more important to write the ideas down and make edits later than meticulously try and make each sentence perfect as you write.
