Tutoring review by Julia in Whitefish Bay, WI
Today we continued working on the computer in Unit 4 Lesson 6. The student added 3 mixed numbers in the context of a perimeter problem, including reducing fractions. He then did a multistep calculation to find a missing side length given the perimeter. He took the Lesson Checkpoint quiz and scored 100% on his own. Lesson practice was all about adding and subtracting mixed numbers. He showed excellent recall of steps needed to answer questions, and needed some support in the form of additional questions and suggested alternative methods. He struggled when borrowing from the whole number (30/30 = 1) and adding the borrowed amount to the existing fraction of thirtieths. However, he quickly picked up the skill and showed mastery in another situation. He took the Lesson 7 Skill Update and earned 100% on his own. This entailed knowing when it is appropriate to estimate, which calculation is best to answer a word problem, and metric measurement conversion. We reviewed area for rectangles and squares, how to multiply fractions and changing mixed numbers to improper fractions. He did the homework from yesterday and was left with another worksheet of multiplying fractions for extra practice.

The student is just starting his new semester, and beyond working on precalculus and a little bit of chemistry, we took time to set goals and a work plan for the next 4 months. He met every goal we set last semester, and I hope that a fresh semester and hence a fresh start will allow him to reach his higher goals this term. He also went on a couple of college visits last weekend, and he came back from them energized and motivated to improve his performance in school. I'm looking forward to helping him channel that drive and motivation into his work. Our next session is scheduled for 9:00am on Saturday morning. Looking forward to it!

We spent about half of our session today working on Spanish, and the other half on revising the intro paragraph for his English research paper. Today, we worked on relative pronouns. I wrote down the "rules" for him, which seemed to help with the remainder of his homework. As for English, the student's paragraph was strong, he just needed a more direct thesis statement, which we worked on. I also began to show him how to do MLA format and what online resources to reference for help moving forward.

Tutoring review by James in Whitefish Bay, WI
This was the student's 15th geometry tutoring session. It went very well. He is learning about how to represent 3D figures using orthographic and isometric drawings. His assignment was quite challenging, but not surprisingly, he persisted through it. He initially had a difficult time picturing the way a given isometric drawing would look from the front, back, top, bottom, right, and left views, but picked up momentum as he chipped away at his assignment. Also, he had a tough time drawing isometric drawings on isometric paper given the isometric drawing at a different angle. But once he erased a few segments at specific locations, the moment came when he saw the picture he sketched and was very pleased with his drawing. The student eventually picked up the pace and was able to create isometric drawings with ease and accuracy. Again, getting to this point was no easy task, but he never gives up! It was awesome seeing him understand how to represent 3D drawings in different ways. Next time, we will dive into calculating volumes and surface areas, discovering how these can change as dimensions change. Excellent work Will!
