Tutoring review by Jessica in Lansing, KS
We worked on geometry concepts that I brought in, beginning with different types of quadrilaterals and the difference between perimeter and area. We practiced using algebra to solve for different lengths and widths, although the student seemed to have some trouble remembering order of operations. When he chooses to concentrate on a problem, he solves it easily, but it is difficult to get him to pay attention.

Tutoring review by Cheryl in Lansing, KS
Today, the student and I discussed the materials that will be on the placement exam. I explained to her the breakdown of the questions: 45 verbal questions, which consist of the 5 scrambled paragraphs, 10 logical reasoning and 30 reading comprehension and 50 math questions on various section: word problem, algebra, arithmetic and geometry. I provided her with math problems from various sections to view her experience in answering questions on prime numbers, distributive property with variables, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing variables, PEMDAS, word problems and algebra (fractions operations, factors/ multiplies greater and least common factors and decimals). She also had 2 reading comprehension passages. Her attitude was upbeat, engaging and humorous. She answered a few of the math questions and the others she did not remember. Overall she and I had a good learning relationship. One strategy I went over was for her to remember with fraction operation: reduce and cancel out common factors from top to bottom. Multiply the numerators to get the new numerator and denominators to get the new denominator. In adding and subtracting get the common denominator and add or subtract the numerators. Lastly, when dividing by a fraction, simply multiply by the reciprocal. I did leave the student with a few more math problems to solve for practice.

We reviewed some questions from the student's old exams, which asked about Lewis structures, formal charges, resonance structures, and octet rules. She needs to just work on reading the questions carefully and making sure the formal charges are written carefully. We also reviewed more thermochemistry problems. She needs to identify the information that is given and the equation to use. If there is no exact equation, then she needs to use dimensional analysis to convert the units to the desired ones.

Tutoring review by Billie in Lansing, KS
We had a very productive session. We worked on the test in a new manner. The student is going to take the test and is only spending time on the questions that he is sure of how to calculate. This method raised his correct answers slightly. Then, he should go back to his test to determine whether he would like to give an attempt to either question.
