Tutoring review by Peter in Chicago Heights, IL
The student and I focused on finding volume by integration using cylindrical shells. He felt successful on his quiz on discs and washers on Wednesday, and today was his last tutoring session before his quiz on shells. We reviewed homework problems. I stressed the importance of visualizing the 3-D figure and the cylinders and figuring out the axis of integration before even starting the problem. After several problems, we moved onto a problem that required him to use washers, discs, and shells to find the volume of the same region revolved around different axes of revolution.

The student and I, in this session, reviewed ratios word problems. She was doing much better towards the end of our time together in terms of her understanding of the material. Her recent improved math scores are evidence that her hard work during sessions is paying off! In this session, she was very focused. I also noticed that she has more confidence with word problems. She also utilizes a strategy I taught her to isolate information and what the question is asking her, to make the word problem less overwhelming. Great job!

We worked ahead to cover trigonometric functions in right triangles, special triangles, degree measure, radians, arc length, and sector area. The student did well with the material. I suggested he practice problems in section 13.2 of his textbook.

Tutoring review by Benjamin in Chicago Heights, IL
We went over exponential growth and decay problems. I had the student work some problems to find the equation of the growth of decay. We went on to review direct and inverse proportionality. These are both topics that his class is currently covering. After working the growth and decay problems he had a fairly good grasp of the subject.

First, the student and I organized his papers. Then, we talked a bit about his grades this quarter, and what he thinks about them. After that, he did some work on some government homework on the Supreme Court that we're hoping will bring his third quarter grade up.

Tutoring review by Erica in Chicago Heights, IL
The student and I worked on fractions today, specifically on the addition and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators, converting mixed numbers to improper fractions and vice versa, and multiplying fractions. This lesson was heavily conceptual: I had her create proofs for 1/3 x 1/2 and 1/4 + 1/2, and similar problems. She initially struggled with these proofs, but by the end of the session, she was able to explain exactly why multiplication of fractions works the way it does. She also struggles with basic arithmetic, so she and I have started a multiplication competition. Each session, I will come with a different set of multiplication problems. We will each do as many problems as we can in 1 minute and I will record her progress. The goal is for her to eventually finish more problems than I can in one minute, after which she will receive a prize. Her assignment for next week is to practice her multiplication facts.
