Tutoring review by John in Canby, OR
The student and I worked on his tablet today, doing problems in preparation for his end of the year test in math. They had done little or no geometry in this class, but problems about volume will be included on the test. We did 20 problems on volume and another 10 word problems using percentages. The verbal portion of the test is challenging. He understands the mathematical part and I think he did well on understanding what was being asked. Volume was new to him, but we did so many problems in a row he seemed very comfortable by the end.

Tutoring review by Alexander in Canby, OR
Today we covered a lot of material. Most of it was review, and some of it was new. We went over the basic probability rules including the notion of sample space and a partition of the sample space. We covered addition and multiplication rules, the test for independence, and the law of total probability. We also covered how to display a scatter plot on a graphing calculator. The student was doing great on these basic topics. We also covered the basics of the empirical rule and the z score. These topics were also review for her, and she seems to remember them just fine. The formula she had a little trouble on was the conditional probability formula, but once we worked through a practice problem she was getting it. A good session. I look forward to moving on to the more difficult material, and I think that the student is completely ready for it.

Tutoring review by Kathy in Canby, OR
We covered different ways of counting (skip two, three, five, and ten) with a 100s chart. Then we practiced addition and subtraction using shortcuts with the hundreds chart. She was using a longer way of adding or subtracting and we used tips to make equations quicker. We practiced multiplication and addition fluency. I gave her a bag of change to count. This was challenging for her. After grouping the quarters into dollar piles, she had difficulty putting the dimes and nickels together to make $1. She got stuck on two nickels being the same as a dime. I would suggest frequent practice of counting random change. I also showed her an online practice program.
