The student showed me how she had learned at school to simplify fractions and was able to work through several examples with calculation. She was able to show two ways to simplify 10/30 and had realized that if she used only 5 as factor to begin with, she could keep going. She did well with pertinent questions, so I gave her the 4th grade version of this in last five minutes of session. The student's understanding of the math concepts seems great and her reading skills are strong.

Tutoring review by Anna in West Linn, OR
Yesterday the student and I continued with his work on geometry. We started by reviewing the terms we learned Monday- plane, vertex, ray, line, and line segment. He did well with remembering these and correctly recalled the difference between ray, line, and line segment. We spent the rest of the time on his next lesson, angles. He was already pretty comfortable with the idea of angles being acute, right, or obtuse. The terms that were new to him were a straight angle, complementary angles, and supplementary angles. Overall, he understands the terms and ideas and was able to do almost all the problems quickly and correctly.

In our first session, we solved some problems regarding descriptive statistics, the normal distribution and the Chebyshev inequality. I focused on breaking down the formulas in simple steps and on their meaning with respect to real data. He was able to grasp concepts that were not clear before, but needs more guidance as the concepts get more and more sophisticated in the second part of the class.
