Tutoring review by Stephanie in Milwaukie, OR
The student completed more multiple choice questions than I had wanted. This all worked out well, though. We spent about an hour reviewing the improving paragraphs and writing questions that he had missed. We talked about tips and tricks for the specific types of questions that he had missed. We also noted that the questions he missed toward the end of the homework section were "easy" ones, whereas in the beginning, the ones he had missed are genuinely harder questions. We spent some time talking about knowing himself as a test taker and choosing which questions to skip throughout so that he does not overly fatigue himself. We will touch on this more in future sessions. For the last thirty minutes, we outlined the essay. While he is doing well at planning his essays, there are still some concerns that he is not providing enough specific detail. We worked through the art of making a plan that shows and doesn't just tell and it really seemed to click with the student. He will write the essay this week and we'll review next. He is also going to complete some critical reading questions in preparation for next week.

Tutoring review by Cassidy in Milwaukie, OR
We spent the first part of the session reviewing the months of the year and how to spell them. I gave her a dictation on the months, which I plan on doing until she has the spelling down. We spent almost an hour reading, with the student reading aloud. She didn't have many vocab questions, but it seems like sometimes she has trouble understanding the bigger picture. For example, she can read the sentences, but might not catch a joke that's being said by one of the characters. Usually after she reads a page or two, we go back and talk about what happened. At the end of the session, we went over some phone etiquette, since she had a couple questions about talking on the phone. For homework, she will study the months.

Today we worked on a lab write up for the student's Chemistry class on phase change and temperature. We talked about how the energy input to the system is either increasing temperature or causing a phase change and how that shows up on a graph of temperature vs. time.

Tutoring review by Hania in Milwaukie, OR
Today I reviewed the student's homework from last week with her. I had to review some of the concepts with her before I gave her a short practice exam. She did well on her second round of practice exams. We then went over state assessment problems. I noticed she had some weaknesses in multiplication so I had her make flashcards for that. I wish her luck in her exam tomorrow. I will be looking forward to her memorization of her 3's and 4's times tables.
