This was my first tutoring session with the student. During this session we reviewed material covered in class for a retest. We went over tangent and secant lines. We also covered several theorems involving angles of quadrilaterals inscribed in circles. I believe that with some extra practice she will be able to raise her grade to her desired goal.

The student and I started by discussing his scores on the September exam and making a plan for our work over the next couple weeks. We will focus even more on Math and Science, since his improvements were smaller in those areas of the test. On his Reading homework, he earned a converted score of 31, so I am optimistic that he can already do better than the 29 he scored on the test. His English section was as great as expected. He missed only 2 on the two passages he worked on, so he is maintaining his ability to score well in the 30s. The rest of the session, he worked through a timed Science test, and we discussed the questions he missed. I am pleased to report that he scored a 28 on the Science section this weekend, so I know he can do better than the 25 he earned on the last test. Next time we will spend most of our time on Math!

The student improved her quiz percentage to a 93%. We are on our way to obtaining our goals. Today we reviewed rotations and went on to rotations around a point other than the origins. She completed her assignment on transformations, and we began discussing congruency and transformations that lead to congruency. To wrap up the session, we completed 20 minutes of algebra skill work, as a solid foundation in algebra is the basis of understanding geometry.

The student and I covered some of the topics on worksheets he received in class. Much of this was over the framers' discussion of human nature through the writings of Montesquieu, Hobbes, and Locke. We also discussed the ideas of representative and direct democracy and gave definitions for what these types of democracies look like. Furthermore, we talked about universal suffrage and the Civil Rights movement and their relationship to the Constitutional Amendments. Finally, he has a quiz over chapter 12 in his book so we went over some of the main points. This chapter covered congress so we discussed bicameralism, committees, how bills become law, etc. We looked at how congress interacts with the President and the Supreme Court, understanding how the system of checks and balances works.

Tutoring review by Rachel in Angleton, TX
We covered the verbal and reading comprehension sections of the SSAT. When the student answered questions with words that she knew, she was pretty confident about them; she just felt insecure about the fact that there were still so many she didn't know. She was also a little unsure with reading, due to the fact that some of the questions had multiple good answers. With practice, these issues will resolve themselves. Overall, she has shown significant improvement with her work. Scores: 45/60 verbal, 4/4 reading comprehension.
