Today we covered the state assessment Math section. There is a lot more the student can learn from our tutoring sessions. She also knows that she has to keep practicing math throughout the summer, so hopefully she can be well ahead of the curve next year!

Tutoring review by Rachel in Friendswood, TX
On Tuesday we reviewed geometry. We discussed several worksheets on volume and surface area. Once the student knew the equations, she did really well with this material. We then worked on her science which was word problems on half lives. She did pretty well with these. Today we worked on more surface area and volume problems. We also worked on a passage from "Romeo and Juliet." She does pretty well when we discuss each line.

The student had testing in class, so we covered some of that material (algebraic equations). Then we worked together on her practice problems. We covered everything from order of operations, quadratic equations, parallelograms, writing equations to find area and perimeter, and writing equations from word problems. She did really well over all. She needed a bit of guidance with the equation writing, but after a few examples she had it down.

Tutoring review by Michael in Friendswood, TX
We covered some examples of inverse trigonometric and their derivatives. These derivatives are computed using implicit derivations. Similarly to the last session, the student seems to understand these concepts very well.

Tutoring review by Colleen in Friendswood, TX
The student has a Chapter 5 test coming up so I set him up with a system for studying the theorems and practices in that chapter. In doing so, he learned (or relearned) several study skills. "Knowing when you don't know" was a big one. He'd rather guess, and he looks to me (or any authority, like his teacher) for non-verbal or verbal cues as to whether he is right. Since he didn't get any from me, he was left to decide whether he did or didn't know, which seemed to be a new skill that required some discussion. This led to a successful way to find the real answer. Guessing doesn't count, even if you accidentally guessed right!
