Session Summaries by Test Prep Tutors

Test Prep Tutoring review by Cindy in Syracuse, NY
In today's session, going over vocabulary went pretty well, the student especially did a great job of memorizing the words assigned and pretty much got every single one of them correct. We were also able to go through the student's assigned math homework. We had a productive session overall.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Gabrielle in Syracuse, NY
We went over her familiarity with the SAT and her previous experiences with it. She's a very strong student who has previously scored quite well in Math and Critical Reading. Although we may spend some time improving those sections even more, we are going to focus primarily on her Writing score. She's aiming for above a 600 but would love anything over a 700. To this end, we talked about some general testing strategies and the kinds of things the essay scorers are looking for when they grade. To assess the student's strengths and weaknesses, I then read an essay she had written in response to a previous prompt in her SAT prep book. After discussing it, I then had her write the body paragraphs of a practice essay in response to a prompt. She is a strong, fluid writer with a great grasp of sentence style and a good ear for grammar but she struggles with coming up with examples in the allotted time. Her main focus in the next two weeks will be learning to write strong examples for prompts as well as developing those examples adequately and relating them clearly back to the topic sentences. In our next sessions, we will do a lot of brainstorming examples to help her learn to generate them more quickly. After working on the essay, I had the student take a quick grammar quiz and then look at a series of questions to assess her strengths and weaknesses. She does very well with grammar and knows the rules of sentence structure better than many college students, which is a great asset. When she does practice tests this week, she will be training herself to correct the sentences before looking at the answer choices and not worry as much about irrelevant stylistic imperfections. For homework, the student is going to write as many 20-minute essays as possible and send them to me when she's finished. She's also going to do several pages of the practice questions on a practice website each night. I'm confident that she's going to do very well on the March 14 test.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Ben in Syracuse, NY
While doing some home math practice for the SAT, the student had difficulty knowing how to approach several of the problems. She brought these to my attention to go over at today's session. Many of the problems involved more abstract math based on the property of substitution, so I gave her some tips on how to recognize problems of this type. She also has some trouble involving problems to do with degrees of a clock face and/or rotation over time, so I walked her through my logic in solving such problems and let her solve the calculations on her own. She is doing much better lately with geometry, recognizing 30-60-90 right triangles, supplementary angles, and vertical angles in diagrams. We also discussed the relationship between exponents and their bases and when to add/subtract exponents and when to multiply/divide. She tends to get anxiety from problems involving multiple variables or more obscure/abstract language (such as "intersection" or "elements"), so we will go over more of these in our next session as we continue to focus mainly on math.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Sienna in Syracuse, NY
As usual, the student and I did math tonight. We started with probability, then moved on to some geometry. We finished up with some vocabulary (sentence completion) questions. The student did a great job tonight. We covered some probability material, which the student has not yet done in class, but even though it was new to her, she picked it up quickly. I am going to send the student some practice problems for her to work on this week. I can't think of anything specific with which the student had a particularly tough time. We did review some sentence completion strategies (looking at roots, including prefixes and suffixes, to figure out meaning, coming up with a word that fits in the blank, then comparing it with the answer options, and putting answer options into the blank(s) and reading the sentence to see if it makes sense) and learn some math concepts (probability topics).
