Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Cindy in Stockton, CA
The student and I covered the treatment unit. This covered topics such as the history of institutions and medications for treating disorders. We differentiated between the various types of therapies and I pointed out important connections between them and the psychologist responsible for their discovery. He asked very insightful questions and we discussed effective methods for preparing for his final exam.

We covered biology, geography, and vocabulary. The student does really well at recalling information that can be made visual, but lacks confidence in abstract ideas. For vocabulary, she came up with great key words for herself and we organized the words into patterns to make it easier to sort through similar definitions. We will definitely be working on building confidence!

During Wednesday's session we continued to finalize the student's high school applications, and identified which essay topics he would like to write about for his final high school application. I also reviewed the short answer component to the applications, as well as reviewing and editing the parent portion of the application. All parts of the applications are looking very strong, and I am confident that he will do very well with these. We concluded our session by him working on his math homework, which focused on algebra.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Michael in Stockton, CA
The student has a paper for biology that he has been working on since the beginning of the school year. We spent the session going over the content of his paper (blood clots in young athletes), as well as the general paper style and format. The final paper is not due yet, but a rough draft was due the day after our meeting. Over the next few meetings we will spend a little time each meeting ensuring that the final draft of the paper is in excellent shape to turn in for grading. He has a great start to the paper! I asked him to complete a checklist of five or six tasks before our next meeting. By completing these tasks we will be better able to work on the paper.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Jessica in Stockton, CA
The student and I worked on math during this session. She is having some difficulty setting up her percent equations from word problems. We went through several examples and she caught on pretty quickly but still struggled with the following: 26 is 8% of what number? We went through more examples and I explained further how to set up the equation. She did a great job and is always a hard worker!

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Zhavon in Stockton, CA
As before, I had the student alternate between work-on-your-own activities and co-working activities. I sang a song about work time and reviewed our work vocabulary: focus, patience, perseverance and work time. This appeared to help the student as he got his supplies and began working on his math homework almost immediately. Once completed, he read his book to me. He wanted to write a message to his dad so I allowed him to do so, but only after he finished the first two activities. I let him continue to write and draw for several minutes. He completed another independent activity. We ended the session with a collaborative activity, a sequencing game. He responds well to clear expectations and boundaries and having something to look forward to.
