The student did very well on Friday. We finished working through many different exercises for the HSPT study book, but we have not delved into the math section yet. I'm also saving some practice exams until closer to the test date and will be on the lookout for more resources to use.

Tonight, I helped the student with the last of her English assignment on the Shakespeare sonnet. She did well, and her teacher has approved of what she has done so far. She was able to get it completed so that she can use it as an example to study for her test, where she has to make a chart reflecting on how to review a sonnet.

Tutoring review by Vicki in California
We began with a review of the student's schoolwork since our last meeting. It appears that she is nearly current in all of her work. This session was used primarily as a study session for upcoming tests. We reviewed the names of the countries - with the correct spelling - for the Central America test. We then moved on to discuss the format for essay writing, with a an in-depth conversation about each of the elements and in what order they are used and why. One of the goals is for the student to think about and understand what she is learning, instead of memorizing it, in order to get through a test or a homework assignment. Next on the agenda was a review of her notes on the current social studies chapter in US government. Again, the emphasis is on understanding, not just copying words from the textbook into her notebook.

Tutoring review by Svetlana in California
During the session, we consider the kinematic problems in 1D and 2D, focus mostly on the directions of the velocity and acceleration. The most challenge for him was to come from the problem formulation to the equations. The student showed a very good attitude, was focused, and worked hard. I used the step by step consideration of the problem: what needs to be found? What is given? Is it enough to find the unknown? What extra knowledge can be used? (When we consider the 1D movement of a ball up and down, we used that the velocity in the highest point = 0). I recommend the student to solve at least two problems a day before our next session. On the next session, we are going to consider what was hard and what was easy for her. I think he understands the kinematic better now. Step by step algorithms to solve the problem are very useful for a student not to be lost between the steps of a multi step problem.

Tutoring review by Sabina in California
During this session, the student and I worked on this week's homework which included evaluating expressions, applying order of operations, and writing expressions from work problems. This last topic area, writing expressions, was the only topic area that she struggled with. She tried to answer the questions too fast, without fully understanding each scenario and then deciding what the most appropriate expression should be. We did additional practice problems for this section and she was doing better. We will continue to practice this for the upcoming class quiz.

Tutoring review by Ryan in California
The student and I ran through the sections of the textbook in class, checking for understanding, reinforcing basic concepts and pointing out things to memorize. Specifically, we worked on difference of two squares, trinomials, and exponents. She came in a great attitude, which made her a pleasure to work with. The only review I left her with were formulas to turn into flashcards and to memorize.
