Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Azmae in San Marcos, CA
We went over the new concepts for the student's Geometry test. He needs some help with his basic Algebra from last year. Without understanding the concepts, he is finding it hard to solve problems. We will continue to focus on this in future sessions. He is really improving in all of his subjects, passing everything! He has a Spanish test this week and has created note cards for it; he is trying really hard to prepare and think ahead for this week.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Amy in San Marcos, CA
We had developed a list of strategies for completing the assignments for each class, so we started by checking in on those. Overall, the student did well. He is using google calendar on his iPad - which he uses for all his school work - to keep track of assignments, so we added a nightly reminder to check the "showbie" portal where he uploads his Latin homework to make sure it's been submitted. Also, he's going to go after school 2 days a week to see his Latin teacher for help. He has 3 English essays due at the end of the quarter, so we set deadlines for a draft of each essay. He's ahead of schedule in his Global Studies class, which is also his favorite, so we're trying to focus on those subject he doesn't like quite as much.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Jessica in San Marcos, CA
The student had a great session today! We started out by finishing his math homework and reviewing performing operations with functions. Then, we worked on ratios, rates, and proportions from the SAT work and reviewed linear function information from last week. We also did an entire reading section on science related reading. He did well. He was able to get all the questions correct. We finished by making a very specific plan about how to get his last two remaining homework tasks (a civics assignment and chemistry studying) completed. This was one of the his best sessions yet because of his openness to trying difficult topics and his efforts at explaining his thinking aloud, even if he made mistakes initially.

We covered organizing work, study skills, and geometry. I demonstrated a simpler way for him to find missing angles. I left him with vocabulary to study for a quiz. We're hoping to see an increase in his scores this week.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Erika in San Marcos, CA
Today, I learned how the student studies, what his classes and teachers are like, and what areas he would like to focus more on. It seems like he needs more help or tips on self-directed learning (i.e., creating his own homework). In this session, we focused more on how to study for his Business Law and Physics tests coming up this week. I noticed a website in his Business Law textbook that has practice quizzes on the material he has been learning, so I suggested he take some of those quizzes to see if they are helpful. I was able to see past standardized tests scores, which helped us to determine that he needs more practice with reading comprehension. I plan on bringing new strategies for him at our next session.

We went over the parts of chemistry the student is having troubles with, which included intermolecular bonds, polar bonds, and dipoles. We also started studying for his upcoming algebra II test, which had adding, subtracting, and multiplying of rational expressions in fractions. He has a review packet he will need to finish as well.
