During this session we continued to work on the student's English assignment to create a Haiku poem of 15 lines. Using her brainstorming ideas as a base, she was able to write the poem with more ease. One of her goals is to build a larger vocabulary, therefore, we began using a thesaurus so she could practice looking up and using a variety of words. She was able to complete the poem because it had to do with some that was personal to her. She plans on using the thesaurus for all future assignments.

Today we selected a piece of classic literature to read for pleasure over Spring Break. We went over previously assigned items, one being a list of transitional words/phrases for writing, as well as grammar prep for quiz on parts of speech. We went over thesis development as well as supporting ideas for thesis in relation to research paper. Lastly, we developed another list of words and colloquial phrases to avoid for properly, formally styled writing.

The student and I reviewed for her final English. We reviewed all of the short stories the class read, literary devices, definitions, and examples. I feel she is very, very well prepared for her final. In addition, I told her to re-read some of the short stories for extra comprehension and thoroughness. She will do great, I am confident.
