Session Summaries by SAT Writing and Language Tutors

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Joe in St. Louis, MO
We drilled primarily math. I gave her some of the hardest math problems I could give her. She was able to solve them within the expected bounds of time and with the expected amount of effort. This suggests that she is reaching a level of comfort. Since the beginning of our sessions, the student's diagnostic composite SAT score has increased by 320 points. This is certainly a victory---on of which she should be very proud! Fantastic job and good luck this Saturday!

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Maxwell in St. Louis, MO
Today, I wanted to get the student's analytic brain working, so I brought some short stories and scripts to dissect with him. It is incredible how engaged he is with these stories and how actively he reads each line of text. The next hurdle is to get that same level of engagement and interest geared towards his SAT attitude. Next week we are going to attack the reading section together. Hopefully, a little cheerleading on my part will spur him to action.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Tara in St. Louis, MO
It was a pleasure to work with the student. We focused on math for the majority of the session. We first discussed how the section is scored and structured, and basic strategies such as when to guess on a question or not. We then went through the majority of a sample math section. I am sending her a complete practice test, and resources to use.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Catherine in St. Louis, MO
The student and I covered a lot of ground in our second session. Her diagnostic sections gave us insight into what we should review. In critical reading, she answered about half of her sentence completion problems correctly. We examined the four logical sentence structures-- support, contrast, definition, and cause and effect. When we dissected the structure of the sentences she missed, she was able to answer the harder questions. She succeeded with the process of supplying her own words, eliminating wrong answers, and finally checking her answer choice. She scored perfectly on the writing passage analysis. She credits this to her work in AP English. She did a good job with the grammar questions, but she will do better with more practice. She knows the grammar concepts when I point them out, but the more familiar she is with the SAT questions, the more she will find errors herself. We reviewed semicolons, illogical comparisons, redundancy, and subject/pronoun agreement. For homework, I assigned her another multiple choice writing section (59-61). In math, we reviewed average (arithmetic mean), and we applied the concept to different types of problem. We also reviewed 30-60-90 triangles. She did extremely well with counting problems using both the fundamental counting principle and Venn diagrams. For this week, I have assigned her triangle review.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Nicolas in St. Louis, MO
This was our last session before the student takes the test. We just focused on general review, going over the different sections and making sure that everything was familiar. He has put in a lot of work, which will hopefully bear fruit. He has improved greatly since we began our sessions.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Andrew in St. Louis, MO
We went over his last practice test, working on all three subjects. He is making great progress in math, but he really needs to focus on his vocabulary in order to progress further in the other sections. Before our next session, he will complete a full, timed practice exam.
