We discussed last week's tests and quizzes, what they scored, what they missed and why they missed it. We discussed setting goals and why standards should be raised instead of just aiming for a passing score. Student J worked on some biology homework that is due later this week.

Tutoring review by Dexter in Hazelwood, MO
For this session, we mostly covered a review of the student's DBQ assignment, which was comprised of forming a thesis on the spread of Buddhism in Han Dynasty China, and we read several primary sources from his history class in an issued packet. We covered the goals of the assignment, including grouping the primary sources into as many categories as possible (pro-Buddhist, opinionated, non-opinionated, pre-Han, post-Han, pro-Confucian, neutral, etc.), quoting evidence to strengthen his thesis, and factoring in the sources of each document and the authors' points of view. We also looked for a visual to further bolster his thesis, such as a graph and a pie chart on the spread of Buddhism during the Han and post-Han times. I then helped him write more about his thesis using the strongest primary source material that supported his claim. After working on his DBQ, of which most of the session was focused, I helped him prepare for pop quizzes and how to decipher college-level vocabulary that is encountered in AP history courses. We then completed his Venn diagram on contrasting the parallels and uniqueness of the Roman Empire and the Chinese Empire (Han Dynasty). It was a productive session.

Tutoring review by Joe in Hazelwood, MO
The student and I continued to work on Math during this session. We reviewed both the last 10 math practice section questions I left him, along with homework practice problems. After discussing patterns and how to deduce the nth term of a pattern at length, we moved on to another practice section. This time, we progressed through the math section, 10 problems at a time with 1 minute per question. He consistently finished ahead of time. His accuracy was equivalent to the previous section (~80-90%), though the number of questions he guessed on decreased significantly in his opinion. Conversely from our previous meeting, he did not struggle with geometry questions, likely due to the practice problems I gave him to review geometric shapes (especially triangles).
