Varsity Tutors offers a Raleigh-Durham Chinese course that can help you learn Chinese whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced learner. Chinese can be a very challenging foreign language to learn, but one of the ways you can make sure you are doing your studies correctly is by enrolling in a course that has a very organized approach to learning the language. A formal course clearly describes the different topics you will cover based on your level, and you can have many opportunities to apply what you have learned in class instantly through language learning exercises. Enrolling in a Chinese course also gives you access to experienced instructors who are trained on how to teach the different peculiarities of Chinese, so you can learn faster and easier compared to just studying on your own.
Learning Chinese can have a lot of benefits both for your personal growth and professional career. Being the most popular language in the world and with one billion native speakers, many students who need to complete a general education requirement in high schools such as William G. Enloe High School and Durham School of the Arts choose to study Chinese. But it's not only high school students who are learning this ancient Asian language. College students from schools like Duke University and North Carolina State University are also getting into Chinese because it can give them opportunities for work after they graduate. Overall, being able to speak Chinese can not only make it easier for you to communicate and connect with people who speak the language, but it can also help you have a thriving career in international business and trade since many companies in the world do business with Chinese companies.
There are some important things to know before you begin your Raleigh-Durham Chinese class. Besides the fact that it is considered one of the hardest languages to learn for English speakers, Chinese is also made up of characters - not an alphabet - that you need to learn in order to communicate effectively. Chinese has over 50,000 characters that exist in the language with 20,000 of those regularly being used for daily life and business. It is the only modern pictographic language, and most of the characters are based on ancient drawings of items they were meant to represent.
What material will a Raleigh-Durham Chinese course cover?
Chinese has very little in common with English, but this should not intimidate you when you start your course. Your course will focus on Mandarin Chinese, which is the official language in the People's Republic of China (including Hong Kong) and Taiwan.
In your Raleigh-Durham Chinese class, you will learn more about tones in Chinese. For beginners, it's important to know that Chinese is a tonal language - meaning the word changes according to its tone. Mandarin Chinese has four tones, namely flat, rising, falling then rising, and falling. This means that the same syllable can be pronounced using the four tones and its meaning will be different. Tones give Mandarin Chinese its distinct sound, but they are also usually the source of miscommunication between foreign learners and native speakers.
You will also learn in your class that Chinese does not have articles, verb inflections, or plural forms. For example, unlike in English where the plural of a noun is formed by adding -s, Chinese nouns retain their form regardless of whether the speaker is referring to a single person or object or many people or objects. You don't conjugate verbs and you don't have to change adjectives in order for them to agree with the nouns they are modifying.
Other topics that would be covered in your class:
- Pinyin
- Pronouns
- Common phrases
- Essential vocabulary
- Reading Chinese
- Grammar and sentence structure
- Pronunciation
- Chinese history
- Chinese culture, customs, and traditions
How will a Raleigh-Durham Chinese course help me learn?
Some students who study a foreign language stop their studies when they are not able to see any progress. In order to improve in a language, you need constant exposure and opportunities to hear and speak your target language. With your Chinese course, you can get access to regular practice with a highly-qualified instructor who can correct your mistakes on the spot and help you address your core difficulties. You can also reach your desired level faster since you will be hearing natural Chinese being spoken in class, and you can also practice speaking with other students. With regular classes and constant deliberate exposure to the language, you can have a more efficient and systematic approach to learning, which could boost your Chinese language skills in a much shorter time.
Another thing that can make it hard for language learners to continue with their studies is the daily commute they have to go through just to attend class. With your Raleigh-Durham Chinese class, you don't need to worry about commuting or waking up very early in the morning just to make sure you arrive in time for your lessons. Varsity Tutors offers Chinese courses entirely online in virtual classrooms. No matter where you are in the city, you can join a course and simply log-on when it's time for your lesson. This is a super convenient way to start learning Chinese because you can study in the comfort of your home, and you don't need to worry about traffic or transportation expenses. But the most valuable thing you can save when you take the online classes is your time. The more time you save from not needing to commute means you will have more time to devote to learning.
