What Does Los Angeles MCAT Prep Cover?
Los Angeles MCAT prep covers all sections and concepts included in the MCAT. This standardized test contains four sections: Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems, Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills, Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems, and Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior. These sections measure your knowledge of concepts that medical school faculty, residents, and medical students deem important to a prospective student's success in the medical field. We're going to break down each section so that you can be prepared when you go to take the test.
The Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems section is comprised of 59 questions which are broken down into 10 passage-based sets of questions and 15 independent questions. You will have 95 minutes to answer all of the multiple-choice questions. This section focuses on the functions of the human body's tissues, organs, and organ systems; chemical and physical principles that underlie the mechanisms operating in the human body; and basic chemical and physical principles of living systems. You will be tested on general chemistry, organic and inorganic chemistry, introductory physics, introductory biology, and basic biochemistry. You need to have a good understanding of how the mechanical, physical, and biochemical functions of human tissues, organs, and organ systems relate to the laws of physics. You will also need to understand the concept of chemical reactions and the periodic table.
The Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills section allows 90 minutes to answer all 53 multiple-choice questions. There are 9 passage-based sets of questions with 5-7 questions per passage. This section focuses on verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, and analytical skills. You will need to understand basic components of a text, how to integrate different components of the text to increase comprehension, how to apply ideas from the passage to new contexts, how to assess the impact of introducing new information to a passage, and how to infer meaning from compositional elements.
You will have 95 minutes to complete the Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems section. This section has a total of 59 questions that are split into 10 passage-based sets of questions and 15 independent questions. This section focuses on processes that are unique to living organisms, biological and biochemical foundational concepts, scientific inquiry, and reasoning skills. You will need to know the concept of how cells and organ systems within an organism act independently and work together to accomplish processes like growing and reproducing, maintaining a constant internal environment, acquiring materials and energy, sensing and responding to environments, and adaptation.
Finally, the Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior section is administered in 95 minutes and is also comprised of 59 multiple-choice questions. Again, there will be 10 passage-based sets of questions and 15 independent questions. This section focuses on skills you will need to know in order to serve an increasingly diverse population, as well as behavior's impact on health, mental issues, and the human and social issues present in the field of medicine. You will be tested on biology, introductory psychology, and introductory sociology. The concepts you need to know include behavior and behavior changes, how people think about themselves and others, cultural and social differences that influence well-being; how psychological, social, or biological factors influence perception and reaction; the relationships between social stratification, and access to resources.
Any of these sections may contain experimental questions that will not count toward your final score. This test is entirely computer-based. You will receive five scores from your exam: one for each of the four sections and one combined total score. Each of the sections is scored from 118-132 and are combined to create a total score, which ranges from 472-528.

...and middle school math. But I am most passionate (and get most geeked out about) teaching science, especially topics in Biology and Life Science, because I love learning about how our living world works! My teaching philosophy revolves around students harnessing their strengths to become independent learners, and my job is to facilitate making those connections. Outside of education, I love spending time outdoors and doing yoga (a combination of both would be ideal!).... My teaching philosophy is that all students have the answers to unlock their own success but sometimes need a little bit of guidance. My job as a teacher is to facilitate learning experiences for students to discover answers on their own.
