If you have a student who is getting ready to take the ISEE, a Louisville ISEE prep course from Varsity Tutors may be a great way to get prepared for the test. The ISEE, or Independent School Entrance Exam, is used by independent school admission boards to evaluate prospective students, and a good score may be a crucial part of your student's application. A Louisville ISEE course will not only provide content for review but can also familiarize students with how the test is paced, scored, and organized so that they can feel confident in their abilities on test day.
We recognize that many students and parents have full personal, professional, and academic lives, so a Louisville ISEE class is designed to be highly accessible. These classes are taught in a collaborative online classroom, so your student can be just moments away from their ISEE class anywhere that they have internet access. This reduces your commute time and makes scheduling more flexible. There are a variety of class times to choose from as well, so you can find something that works for you and your student. A group also gives you access to a highly-qualified, rigorously vetted instructor at a great value.
What material will my student review in a Louisville ISEE class?
The ISEE takes several forms, depending on what grade your student is entering. For the 2nd through 4th grades, students will take the Primary Level ISEE. Students going into the 5th and 6th grades will take the Lower Level, the Middle Level will be for 7th and 8th-graders, and the Upper Level covers students entering the 9th grade and above. Let's take a look at what will be covered on each of these exams, so you can have a better idea of what's covered in a Louisville ISEE course.
At the Primary Level, students will take multiple-choice Math and Reading sections. Math covers basic math operations, and Reading will assess reading comprehension and vocabulary. There is also a Writing section, where students can show their personality and creativity to schools by writing a simple story about a pictorial prompt. This section isn't graded at any level of the ISEE, and is a chance for schools to get to know your student. There is also an Auditory Comprehension section exclusive to the 2nd grade ISEE, where students will answer questions based on auditory passages.
The Lower Level ISEE has Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, and Math Achievement sections, as well as an Essay. Verbal Reasoning will ask students to have an elementary to middle school-level vocabulary and to be able to use context to derive meaning from sentences. Quantitative Reasoning assesses your student's conceptual understanding of math, with questions on estimation, comparison, and numeric logic. Reading Comprehension will ask students to be able to find the main and supporting ideas in passages, and to use this information to answer questions. The Math Achievement section will cover a student's ability with math operations in basic algebra and geometry. On the Essay, students will respond to a prompt of interest to elementary school children, giving them a chance to introduce and express themselves to prospective schools.
The Middle Level test uses the same sections and structure as the Lower Level. Here, the Verbal Reasoning section will require a middle school to high school-level vocabulary and will ask students to use prefixes, suffixes, and word roots as clues to figure out the meanings of words. Quantitative Reasoning will expand to cover data analysis and geometry, with students being asked to use formulas to measure lines and the areas of quadrilateral shapes, for example. Reading Comprehension will now ask students to compare and contrast information in passages, extrapolate implicit information, and to be able to discern between literal and non-literal language. Math Achievement covers ratios and estimation, factors, primes, and geometry involving quadrilaterals and triangles. The Essay is similar to the Lower Level Essay section, but the prompt will be aimed at middle school-level students.
Finally, the Upper Level ISEE. This version of the test uses the same format as the Lower and Middle Levels. Upper Level Verbal Reasoning asks students to have a high school vocabulary, an understanding of synonyms, and to be handy with prefixes, suffixes, and word roots. The Quantitative Reasoning section will put the focus on problem-solving, requiring students to interpret and make inferences about data, understand the properties of triangles and quadrilaterals, and to work with variables and exponents. Reading Comprehension will be similar to the Middle Level section, but the passages presented will be more complex, and students will have to show a deep understanding of how to extract information from a text. Math Achievement will ask questions involving mean, median, and mode; area and perimeter, and coordinate grids. At the Upper Level, the Essay section will still not be scored, but students should demonstrate the ability to craft a well-organized, grammatically and syntactically accurate essay that will pique the interest of admissions boards.
How will a Louisville ISEE course help my student review?
A Louisville ISEE class is taught entirely online in an interactive classroom environment, where students will have group discussions with their peers led by an expert teacher. This type of group review has been shown to be very effective in helping students come to grips with new information, and also can help them remember this information in the long term. Your student will have the opportunity to be exposed to new learning methods and share their own unique strengths with their classmates, which can deepen understanding of content material. Of course, one-on-one time with a qualified teacher can be helpful as well, especially if your student finds themselves struggling in particular areas, so the class allows students to request exactly this kind of private, personalized help when they need it. The class is built from the ground up to give your student many avenues to learning, so they can find what works best for them.
There are both 2-week and 4-week long course sections available, and new sections being on a rolling basis every week. This means that no matter where your student is in their ISEE prep, or when they'll be taking the test, they can find a course that fits their needs. There are a variety of course times to choose from as well, so even if you've got a busy schedule, there can be something that will work for you and your student.
How can I get signed up for a Louisville ISEE course?
Even as a single, isolated academic challenge, the ISEE is certainly important, as it can have a definite impact on your student's application to an independent school. However, the fundamental academic material and test-taking skills that a Louisville ISEE course can assist your child in developing and solidifying have a utility that may go far beyond the ISEE itself, and certainly can continue to pay off should your child be admitted to the school of their choice. Reach out to Varsity Tutors today, and we can provide extra information about our offerings and get you signed up for a course that can help your student in pursuing success at an independent school.
