Parents who want to provide their students with additional assistance for the ISEE exam should contact Varsity Tutors to enroll in a Dayton ISEE prep course. The Independent School Entrance Exam is a test that will determine your student's admission into a private or an independent school. The ISEE uses a student's grade level to place them into one of four ISEE testing levels. The Upper, Middle, and Lower Levels have the same number of questions and set time allotments in which students must complete each of the five sections.
The Primary Level ISEE structure slightly varies from the other three testing levels and is broken into three sub-categories in which elementary school-aged children are placed. The testing sections cover these main educational subjects: Math, English (writing), and Reading. The Upper, Middle, and Lower Level testing levels include two additional sections that are entitled Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning.
What does an online Dayton ISEE course include?
An online Dayton ISEE course covers material on the exam to provide students with an in-depth review. The Primary Level of the ISEE is given to students who are entering grades two through four. The sub-categories are entitled Primary 2-4 and refer to the upcoming grade your student will begin the following school year. Students who test in the Primary 2 sub-category are required to complete an additional section on the ISEE called Auditory Comprehension in which they must respond to questions that reference an audio passage played for them. The time allowance for this short section of the ISEE is seven minutes to complete six questions.
The other three parts of the ISEE within the Primary section include grade-appropriate items. The Reading and Math sections on the Primary version of the ISEE include multiple-choice questions that focus on vocabulary and basic math operations commonly taught in early education. The Writing sample that students must produce stems from a picture prompt. Students in the Primary Level must respond by composing a short story that can show prospective schools their personality, writing, skills, and creativity.
Next, the Lower Level of the ISEE is for students who will begin grades five and six the following school year. The material within the Verbal Reasoning section for the Lower Level will assess English-related skills. Students are given twenty minutes to answer forty questions completely. The items will relate to sentence completion and vocabulary. The Quantitative Reasoning and Math Achievement are both sections that include math-related material. Students in the Lower Level of the ISEE use the conceptual method of probability and estimation to answer some questions in both sections. The Math Achievement section will ask students to show their knowledge of percentages, fractions, and simple math operations, whereas Quantitative Reasoning seeks student knowledge of addition, subtraction, identifying characteristics of geometric objects, and division. The Math Achievement section asks students to respond to forty questions within forty minutes, and the Quantitative Reasoning asks students to respond to thirty-seven questions within thirty-five minutes. The Reading Comprehension section assesses a student's ability to locate relevant information within a passage, find the main idea, and use information from passages to answer questions. This section lasts thirty-five minutes, and students must respond to thirty-six questions.
The Essay section of the ISEE asks students at all levels to compose an essay or story that responds to the prompt given to them. Students should take this opportunity to show prospective schools their writing abilities, personality, and creativity. Skills that are assessed include thought organization as well as the ability to use correct grammar skills. Essays should be fully completed within thirty minutes after they begin.
Students who will test on the Middle Level ISEE will be entering seventh and eighth grades. Middle Level test takers must complete the Verbal Reasoning section with the additional expectation of showing knowledge of parts of speech, the use of word clues, and vocabulary that is common in middle and high school education. Skills that are added to the Quantitative Reasoning section are the ability to find the length of a line, square roots, using the distributive property, and working with integers. Moving on to the Math Achievement section, skills that are added to the ISEE for the Middle-Level version include integer comparison, properties of operations, prime factorization, and the use of a Venn Diagram. Finally, the Reading Comprehension section adds the concepts of cause and effect, comparing and contrasting, finding information that is subtly stated in written passages, and the knowledge of figurative and literal language use.
Finally, the Upper Level will test high school students entering the ninth grade or beyond. Some of the additions to the Verbal Reasoning section of the ISEE are the understanding of high school vocabulary and the use of synonyms. As your student enters the Quantitative Reasoning portion of the exam, they must show proficiency in working with exponents, solving equations, data set inferences, and using mean, median mode, and range. The next section, Reading Comprehension, adds the requirement to identify features and relationships between different literary genres. Finally, the Math section of the Upper-Level version of the ISEE adds the need to solve word problems and to use coordinate grids.
