About Kentucky

Kentucky is one of the four states in the United States that is designated as a commonwealth. The "Bluegrass State" is named such not because of the music, but instead because of the fields of bluegrass that are found in fields throughout the state. The state also houses one of the largest cave systems in the world, Mammoth Cave National Park, and two of the nation's largest man-made lakes.

Kentucky has some excellent schools. Some of the best ranked public schools in the state are DuPont Manual High in Louisville, Highlands High School in Fort Thomas, and Beechwood High School in Fort Mitchell. Students in Kentucky looking for online or in-home private tutoring, test prep, and instruction can find a private tutor with the help of Varsity Tutors. Students also have the option of private schools like St. Francis High School and Louisville Collegiate School, which are both in Louisville. The student and I covered a lot of material. I gave him a crash course on phase changes, thermodynamics, enthalpy, quantum theory, electron configuration, chemical bonding, and shapes of molecules. He knew the material very well already, so I am looking forward to going over his previous midterms in preparation for his upcoming final exam next time.

Tutoring review by Gavin in Kentucky
Today the student and I discussed transforming primary functions (in the for ab^x-h+k) by identifying their a, h, and k values and sketching the corresponding graphs. He is very proficient in evaluating equations and describing the transformations. He will want to continue practicing identifying which value is a, h, or k and first determining how the graph will transform before sketching the graph. Negative exponents were a new concept for him, so we will continue discussing how to evaluate negative exponents by taking the reciprocal. He identifies the values of a, h, and k proficiently for functions in vertex form. We will discuss converting quadratic standard form to vertex form next week. He is building a solid foundation for evaluating quadratic and higher functions.

He and I worked on completing his homework that is due next week. The homework focused on determining amounts from a scale that is given. He did awesome with all of the problems and only needed help with a few tricky ones. We also started working on some review for his upcoming test, and he did awesome on those, as well!

Tutoring review by Emily in Kentucky
We continued to focus on exponents. Today, we focused on negative exponents. He and I went over his homework for that evening. He initially had difficulty understanding the need to distribute the exponent to the coefficient, but after going over the mechanics behind the power rule, he was able to correct the other questions he got incorrect. We also went over the concept of negative exponents and what that means. I think that the concept of dividing by a fraction was not grasped completely, so we may have to go over a different way to explain that next session.

Tutoring review by Tárrin in Kentucky
We spent some time discussing what main areas of study to focus on, and how he did last year. We did a quick review of punctuation, capitalization and quotation. We then did a reading assignment where him and I read a passage and then answered some comprehension questions. We were unable to finish the assignment because he was experiencing some technical difficulties.

Tutoring review by Chrissy in Kentucky
During our time together, the student and I reviewed the sequence of numbers 1-50 as our warm up. He was provided numbers and then filled in the missing numbers in the sequence. Afterwards, he ordered 4 numbers from least to greatest by looking at the tens place of the number. We practiced math addition facts with numbers 0-10 using number bonds along with picture representations. We concluded the session by reviewing the fact family for the numbers 10, 6, and 4. He recognized the visual aid we used for fact families and recalled that the tens frame had ten boxes in it.
