By signing up for a course provided by Varsity Tutors, your student can enjoy interactive and flexible online lessons tailored to help them gain confidence for the ISEE.
The ISEE, also known as the Independent School Entrance Exam, is a test used to measure a potential student's academic abilities. To help your student pursue a favorable score on their exam, consider providing them with a Charlotte ISEE course provided by Varsity Tutors. This way, your student can make the most of their study time to grow their confidence as their exam date approaches.
What does a Charlotte ISEE class include?
A Charlotte ISEE class covers all areas of the ISEE, depending on the level your student is at. A child entering 2nd grade would be at the Primary 2 level, while a student entering 3rd grade would be at the Primary 3 level. A student entering 4th grade would be at Primary 4, while an individual going into 5th or 6th grade would be at the Lower Level. Students entering 7th or 8th grade would be at the Middle Level, and any student entering 9th grade or above is at the Upper Level. All levels of the ISEE, other than the Primary Level, feature the same sections, number of questions, and time restraints, but certain sections vary based on academic level.
The Verbal Reasoning section is a 40 question portion that allows test-takers 20 minutes to complete. The Verbal Reasoning section is designed to access a student's English skills. At the Upper Level, students are tested on synonym questions and sentence completion. At the Middle Level, this portion quizzes test-takers on parts of speech, vocabulary, and word clues. Lower Level ISEE students are asked questions related to context clues and vocabulary when completing the Verbal Reasoning portion, while Primary Level ISEE test-takers do not have a Verbal Reasoning section on their exam.
The next section of the ISEE is the Quantitative Reasoning section. Here, students are asked 37 questions in 35 minutes related to mathematical operations. The Upper Level exam tests students on problem solving, data analysis and probability, measurement, and numbers and operations. Students at the Middle Level are tested on algebra, geometry, integers, and operations involving variables as well. For Lower Level students, a Charlotte ISEE class can test-takers prepare by teaching addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills. The Primary Level of the ISEE does not have a Quantitative Reasoning section.
Up next is the Reading Comprehension section of the ISEE. On this portion of the exam, students are provided with 35 minutes to complete 36 questions on the topic of author's intent, organization and logic, main and supporting ideas, and vocabulary. Upper Level students should know how to identify relationships between and features of different literary genres, how to infer information not explicitly stated, how to compare and contrast information, and how to find and use information from passages to answer questions. At the Middle Level, students should understand cause and effect and figurative and literal language use. For Lower Level ISEE test-takers, the Reading Comprehension course covers main and supporting ideas, organization, vocabulary, tone, style, and language. At the 2, 3, and 4 levels of the Primary exam, the Reading Section asks multiple-choice questions to assess a student's reading comprehension and grade-appropriate vocabulary.
The Math Achievement portion of the ISEE asks 47 questions over the course of 40 minutes. This portion assess math operations skills, asking Upper Level students how to solve equations, word problems, and so on. Students at the Middle Level are tested on algebra, measurement, and problem solving when taking this portion of the ISEE. The Lower Level Math Achievement section asks students questions related to whole numbers, probability and data analysis, and geometry. Finally Primary students are asked multiple-choice questions related to mathematical abilities, including basic math operations, when completing this portion of the exam.
The last section of the ISEE is the Essay section. Students are given one prompt and 30 minutes to provide a written response. The Essay section looks at a student's ability to plan and organize a written piece, use grammar, punctuation, and spelling, and how to use relevant details to add interest. At the Upper, Middle, and Lower levels, students are given the opportunity to use this section as a way to tell prospective schools more about themselves. Meanwhile, Primary students are shown a picture prompt and asked to write a response that tells a story about the picture. The writing sample a Primary test-taker gives is not scored, but does provide a glimpse of their abilities to the school they are applying to.
What are the benefits of a Charlotte ISEE class?
In an ISEE class, students are able to work in an online classroom environment hosted by a skilled and knowledgeable instructor. Not only can students learn from this instructor through their lectures, but those enrolled in the class can actually ask questions to their instructor in real time to receive quick and concise answers. Students can also interact with one another for the most communicative learning environment possible.
Whether a student is struggling while practicing for the Essay section or having a difficult time while studying for the Quantitative Reasoning portion, a Charlotte ISEE prep course can provide test-takers with additional information and advice to help them gain confidence as their exam date approaches. If your student is stressed by the ISEE, they may be able to relax after taking an ISEE course online.

Having completed a student teaching term, I am familiar with learners of all shapes and sizes and can accomodate my style of teaching to best suit every student!... My teaching philosophy is that the best way for students to learn is for them to work out problems themselves. I prefer to ask provocative questions that lead students to the answer rather than just show them how, or give them the answer. In my experience this is the most effective method of teaching.
