If your student is planning on taking the ISEE, they may be able to benefit from a Los Angeles ISEE prep course provided by Varsity Tutors. The ISEE, or Independent School Entrance Exam, is a standardized test used by independent school admission boards to evaluate incoming students. A lot might be riding on your student's score on the test, so it's important to do well, and a Los Angeles ISEE course can be a valuable tool in getting your student ready for test day.
A Los Angeles ISEE class is taught entirely online through a collaborative online classroom. Your student can benefit from group discussions with their peers, which are led by an expert instructor. There are multiple class sections and new classes start weekly, so you can find the class that feels right for your student and fits into your busy schedule. The ISEE covers a lot of material, and changes depending on the grade level of your student, so you might be unsure of how to get started preparing for the test. A prep class will not only dive deep into the subject matter that the ISEE covers, but will also provide your student with insights into how the test is structured and scored, so they can discover test-taking strategies that may be the extra boost they need to get ahead on the ISEE.
What can a Los Angeles ISEE class help my student learn?
The ISEE is broken into four levels. The Primary Level test covers students entering 2nd through 4th grades, the Lower Level covers the 5th and 6th grades, the Middle Level covers the 7th and 8th grades, and the Upper Level covers the 9th through 12th grades. We'll provide a brief overview of each of these tests here, so you can know what your student will be faced with when they take the ISEE.
At the Primary Level, the ISEE consists of Reading, Math, and Writing sections, plus an Auditory Comprehension section exclusive to students entering the 2nd grade. The Reading section will assess your student's knowledge of grade-level-appropriate vocabulary and reading comprehension, and the Math section will cover basic mathematics. For the Writing section, students are given a picture prompt and are asked to respond with a story. This section is not graded, but is instead meant to be an opportunity for schools to learn more about your student and their creative abilities. The Auditory Comprehension section will ask students to listen to a series of passages and provide answers to related questions.
The Lower Level ISEE is made up of Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Math Achievement, and Essay sections. This structure is used for all levels of the test above the Primary Level. On the Verbal Reasoning section your student will have to understand how context affects the meaning of sentences, and will be tested on grade-appropriate vocabulary words. Quantitative Reasoning will require your student to understand numeric logic, as well as to be able to estimate and compare numbers and understand characteristics of geometric shapes. The Reading Comprehension section will require students to locate the central arguments of passages, and use information from the passages to answer questions. Math Achievement asks students to understand basic math operations, simple geometry, and how to work with decimals and fractions. There is also an Essay section where students will write an essay on a provided topic, so that schools can get to know your student.
For the Middle Level, the Verbal Reasoning section will expect students to have a middle school to high school-level vocabulary, and to be able to use prefixes, suffixes, and roots to determine meanings of words. Quantitative Reasoning will ask students to use algebra and geometry to find lengths of lines, calculate area, and find calculate measurements with formulas. The focus of this section is measurement and problem solving. For Reading Comprehension, students will now have to be able to infer non-explicit information from texts, and be able to understand figurative and literal language. Math Achievement will test students on properties of operations, prime factorization, ratios and proportions, properties of quadrilaterals and triangles, and more. The Essay section is similar to the Lower Level. Students are provided with a prompt appropriate to their grade, and will respond in the form of an essay.
Last, the Upper Level of the ISEE. Here the Verbal Reasoning section will demand a high school-level vocabulary, and students will have to be able to use context, suffixes and prefixes, word roots, and understand synonyms to do well. Upper Level Quantitative Reasoning really puts the focus on your student's ability to think mathematically, with a stress on problem-solving skills, probability problems, and data analysis using concepts from algebra and geometry. The Reading Comprehension section will require students to understand the organization of passages, authorial intent and tone, and how to infer information from texts. Math Achievement will zero on on skills with math operations, asking students to solve equations and word problems involving variables, area and perimeter, quadrilaterals and triangles, and coordinate grids. The Essay section will provide a high school-level prompt and ask students to respond with a well-organized, grammatically precise essay that uses supporting details.
How will a Los Angeles ISEE course teach my student?
A Los Angeles ISEE course is presented in an online classroom format where your student will see, hear, and speak with their teacher and their classmates just as if they were sitting together in a brick-and-mortar classroom. Group discussions with their peers can help your student absorb and retain information more effectively than solitary study might, and exposure to new perspectives and ideas in conversation with classmates can give your student new tools to respond to the questions on the ISEE. An expert teacher will oversee the course and guide students in their study, and will also be available for reserved one-on-one time, if your student has difficulty with certain sections of the test and would like a bit of private instruction.
An online Los Angeles ISEE course means no commute, easy enrollment, and easy scheduling. Courses are offered in 2-week and 4-week long sections and begin on a rolling weekly basis, so whenever you're beginning to think about ISEE prep, you can find a course to suit your schedule. Plus, not only can a group class offer serious educational benefits for your student, but it also helps you save, giving you access to a highly-qualified instructor at a great value.
