We've helped thousands of learners of all ages improve their reading and English skills including teaching English as a second language.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

ACT Reading Tutoring review by Jeanne in St. Louis, MO
The student and I covered the ACT English section this session, using the ACT prep book. She seems to be skilled in intuitively answering the English questions, but we went through several of the grammar rules that are repeatedly covered on the ACT, and I think these will very much help her increase her score by realizing what the error is in the question. She will practice these skills, and I think with the increased grammar knowledge and strategies, such as redundancy and conciseness, she can do quite well. Next session, we will do an overview of the ACT sections as the exam approaches.

ACT Reading Tutoring review by Ian in St. Louis, MO
This session, the student and I went over a practice English test. This is a section we will keep working to improve. When we went over the answers, it was clear that the student understood why the correct answer was the best choice, and she often chided herself for having not chosen it. The ability is there, the skills are there, they just need to come out through technique, practice, and confidence. I think that if she becomes more methodical in her approach to answers, then she will be able to turn around many of the questions that she is currently getting wrong. I will practice this with her more directly in future sessions.

The student worked on another set of reading and science sections, this time monitoring his own time and adjusting his pacing accordingly. He was able to finish each section with only a couple of questions left.

ACT Reading Tutoring review by Ilana in St. Louis, MO
To begin with, I gave the student some equations she should be aware of for the ACT (midpoint formula, distance formula, equation of a circle). I meant to get to parallel and perpendicular lines as well, but we didn't end up having time. We only did math today because she did one of the diagnostic tests and we went over the questions she had trouble with. She felt rusty on some older algebra concepts, so we went over fractional exponents and factoring. We did a money problem (given the amount of money, asked to find the number of coins) and she was able to explain back to me what we did to solve it and what the variables meant, which was really good improvement from previous word problems we've done. It's important with modeling problems to understand what equations mean as well as how to solve them. Next time, we'll work on the Science section and she is going to do a reading comprehension section in her book and ask me any questions that she has about them. If we have time, we'll continue going over the math test.
