Tutoring review by Patrick in Sleepy Hollow, NY
The student and I had our final session today. I reviewed an SAT essay she wrote timed. She understands how to hit all the right points. With the right finesse and focus, I expect she will get a 5 or 6. We then reviewed math (particularly interest-based problems), and critical reading sentence completion. We wrapped with a discussion on strategy, confidence, and mentality. I've enjoyed working with her!

Tutoring review by Scott in Sleepy Hollow, NY
Today we reviewed material. We covered the real numbering systems, which includes the rational and irrational numbers, integers, and natural numbers. We also practiced converting numbers to and from scientific notation. Finally, we briefly reviewed perfect squares and estimating square roots. I think we had the most trouble with scientific notation. The student was able to convert a number to scientific notation without too much trouble, but converting a number back from scientific notation seemed to stump him, such as 2.3*10^2 = ?. We spent much of the time covering this topic, and by the end, he was able to do the problems easily.

Today the student and I worked on her college algebra chapter 2 review. We covered such topics as finding the zeros of a function and finding the vertex of a function. She did really well with most of the problems; she just needs to practice her word problems.

The student and I covered all parts of the SSAT -- writing, reading, verbal, and math. He had an exceptional tutoring session today. He wrote over a page for his writing prompt, asked many questions to improve his understanding of words in the verbal section, and asked questions about concepts he hasn't yet learned in math. We also discussed test taking strategies briefly.

Tutoring review by Florence in Sleepy Hollow, NY
We worked with deriving word meanings from context using a direct reading. Additionally, we covered the literary devices of foreshadowing and how this figures into making predictions and drawing conclusions. The student was enthusiastic during the activity and readily asked questions.

We used the student's ASVAB prep book and went through the Math chapter. He was struggling a bit with extracting the necessary information from word problems and applying it to known equations. I showed him how drawing out what the words were saying would help him visualize what data he had and what he would need to solve for. I am looking forward to our future sessions because he already noted that I was already able to help him understand some of the material better for his upcoming test. I think his confidence will be the biggest factor in improving his score, and I've already seen improvement!
