Tutoring review by Jesse in San Juan Capistrano, CA
The student and I went over how to graph a variety of functions in preparation of her two-part final starting Wednesday and continuing into Thursday. She felt confident in her graphing of most problems save the form of the rational function, which we spent extra time on. We are meeting again tomorrow to make sure she is confident going into the final and will be able to tackle any problems she previously might've had reservations about.

Tutoring review by Michael in San Juan Capistrano, CA
Today was my first session with the student and I tried to get a grasp on what he is learning and what areas he needs to focus on. He is covering trigonometry, and today we specifically reviewed relationships between all the trig functions. We reviewed his previous homework covering how to calculate all the other trig values when given one of the trig ratios and then using the triangle relationships and SOHCAHTOA. We then continued to newer material on trig identities and reviewed his study sheet with all the formulas/trig identities he needs to know. For the remainder of the session I went over a proof using trig identities and he finished the session by trying several on his own with guidance. We will need to focus on studying trig identities to start understanding and remembering all the relationships. I reviewed how he can derive some of them if he is only able to remember a few. We will continue practicing the trig identities tomorrow after which I will give him some extra practice. Finally, another area we will focus on reviewing is some of the algebraic factoring patterns as these do show up in manipulating some of the trig identity problems and he seems to need a short review on these.

We continued to work on integrals for the inverse trigonometric equations, differential equations, and integration using substitution. We practiced using the completing the square method of factoring to put equations into the format needed to integrate the inverse trig functions. The student is doing well with slope fields and getting more comfortable with differential equation word problems and integrating using substitution.

Today, we went over polynomials - specifically adding, subtracting, and multiplying polynomials. The adding and subtracting of polynomials was relatively straightforward. We then began covering high yield material that would be important in understanding how to factor polynomials in the next chapter. This included difference of squares and perfect trinomials (addition and subtraction). Applying these concepts in the questions took a little bit of time, as there was so much math involved in simplifying before getting to the final answer. Nevertheless, the student didn't seem to struggle too much conceptually, but rather with keeping track of the many terms so as not to make any minor mistakes.

The student needs to pass his proficiency test. Today, we covered additive and multiplicative properties of numbers and order of operations (OOO). He was answering about 90% of the questions correctly. Worksheets will be sent for homework.

The student went over his science presentation with me. He also wrote a book review of Ender's Game, and did a good job of going over the main themes of the book. I helped him hone this essay until it was much more tightly written. He has very good ideas; it is just a matter of getting him to express them in the most logical, smooth manner he can.
