In today's session we worked through Algebra II problems involving polynomial expressions and finding real and complex roots. The student did an excellent job of working through her worksheet and expanding the concepts.

The student is just starting derivatives, they briefly went over limits and are now into learning the first few rules of differentiation. We went over the basic power rule. I made sure to show him odd fringe cases, like square roots, things in the denominator, and how to make problems easier for yourself. I introduced him to product rule and showed him quotient rule. He has a quiz coming up, so next session we will review for that, after we receive the study packet from school.

Tutoring review by Hadiya in Salem, MA
The session began with evaluating variable expressions. The student needed to use PEMDAS to solve the equations. He needed assistance to remember which order to solve the equations. Next, we reviewed the Pythagorean Theorem involving right triangles. He has to find out if the given triangles were right triangles by plugging in the numbers into the formula. He only needed help with one problem. Next, we discussed ratio word problems. I showed him to turn the ratio into a fraction and to cross multiply. Lastly, I directed him to take a learner style survey on an online website. I want him to be aware of the type of learner he is (auditory and tactile), to create better learning strategies. We discussed his upcoming exam and his accommodations.

Tutoring review by Gabriella in Salem, MA
This was my first session with this student. I provided a lesson plan for the material her class is covering. She had her math book from school and a supplemental text. We mainly reviewed powers of 10. She is extremely bright and works hard. We also worked on study skills and stress management techniques that she can use on her own to power through difficult problems.

Tutoring review by Elise in Salem, MA
The student did well today! I think she needs a brush up on algebra before she gets into the harder concepts of algebra II. I think her biggest weakness in math overall is the multi-step problems/ processes. When it comes to higher math, she'll need to be able to master these courses which are all about multi-step processes. With her, it's just about remembering each method of solving the problem and applying it to every problem. This is one big thing I noticed today which we'll work on in the upcoming sessions! Today we went over the concepts on her first quiz. On her first quiz, she had some frivolous mistakes but on the other hand, I don't think she remembers some of the bigger (and important) concepts from algebra I. I can tell she isn't confident when it comes to math and that's one of my goals with her, to get that confidence up. I told her when it comes to her work to start reviewing what she learned nightly so it's fresh in her mind and if there are any questions or concerns she has, she knows before a quiz and can ask in class the next day or next session with me. I left her with some extra work to finish before Tuesday's session. With each session, I'm going to devote some time to some work/ concepts from algebra I so she is seeing the work again and gaining confidence. I also want to work ahead in the textbook little by little (once she is confident and knows all the major concepts from algebra I) with her and introduce the concepts to her so that when it comes to class time, she's prepared. I'm excited to be working with this student and looking forward to improving her grades and confidence!

Tutoring review by Andrew in Salem, MA
We spent the bulk of our time discussing the unit circle and how to graph trigonometric functions. The concepts were a bit fuzzy for the student, but I was able to clarify some crucial points. She remained focused and engaged even while I struggled to effectively explain some problems we worked through. My biggest challenge was helping her to understand why certain equations followed certain rules. I encouraged her to re-work problems her teacher had given her and any additional practice problems he provided. Towards the end of our study session, we also worked on practice ACT problems. Her retention and exercising of ACT test strategies is definitely improving.
