The Plano School System

Plano, Texas, is one of the suburbs of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. With a population of almost 270,000, Plano is one of the top ten largest cities in Texas. The Plano public schools are part of the Plano Independent School District, which has a total attendance of about 55,000 students in grades K-12. Unlike the majority of the nation’s high schools, Plano students attend two levels of high schools: one for students in grades 9-10 and one for students in grades 11-12.

If you have a student who could use some additional academic support, Varsity Tutors can help you find accomplished Plano tutors. Some students don't get the attention they need in school, but the one-on-one support of a tutor can move at the student's pace and offer instruction using the student's preferred learning style. See the student-teacher ratios of Plano high schools below.

Students who face academic challenges turn to many different types of learning aids, including subject- or test-specific workbooks, online tutorials, and group review seminars. However, these resources lack the most important factor affecting a student’s learning experience: interaction. Fortunately, personal tutoring in Plano can fill this gap. When your child works with a tutor, he or she will receive instruction that takes into account his or her interests, optimal learning style, and ultimate academic goals during one-on-one sessions that allow learning to take place at your student’s pace.

Plano Test Scores

The table shown above displays the STAAR performance of Plano’s public schools. The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, best known as the STAAR, is given to students from the third through eleventh grades. The test measures a student’s knowledge in several subjects, including reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. Ninth, tenth, and eleventh graders are given various End of Course assessments in addition to the standard STAAR. The End of Course tests evaluate students’ mastery of a wide range of subjects, including literature and composition, physical science and biology, algebra and geometry, United States history, and economics.

Many high school students must also prepare for standardized exams required for college admissions like the ACT or SAT, and some find the personal guidance of a tutor to be especially helpful. The tips and tricks your child may learn from his or her tutor can help build up not only knowledge, but also confidence. Plus, the positive influence of a tutor’s passion for a subject can be infectious. College students can benefit from private tutoring, too. Plano is also conveniently located near a variety of colleges and universities in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Here's how those colleges stack up:

Tutoring review by Ian in Plano, TX
I was really impressed with the student's algebra skills, especially in fraction manipulation.  All the right skills are there, we just need to apply them in the right situations.  I'm putting together a worksheet to show him that there are really only about 15 different types of calculus problems at the stage he's at, and then we can work on not only practicing solving those types, but identifying how different looking problems really are the same and fit into one of the general cases or "rules" he needs to follow.  Memorization will come through practice, and answering all of his questions along the way.  I think meeting twice a week for 1.5 hours will be the right amount of time for this work.  I'm really looking forward to continuing to work with the student.

I met the student, and we started reading a book that was a little too hard, and then switched to some funny poems, which he seemed to enjoy, and which were more appropriate difficulty-wise.  Also, I think the poems are a good way to practice his visualization strategy.

The student and I worked on math practice problems in preparation for her test coming up in the following week. We also worked on authentic writing by explaining how to change an improper fraction to a mixed number as well as explaining how to compare fractions. Authentic writing was shown by writing the steps in sequence in order to solve a problem.

The student and I went through verbs for S and T. He conjugated them. Then we worked on more accusative worksheets. I also made him some materials for the next ten days to work on. I left directions with him and the answer keys with his father. I'm going to work with him to make him feel more comfortable with longer sentences and figuring out what a sentence means even if you don't know all the words.

For the Ch2 test tomorrow, we went over the practice test and a few concepts. She also has a history test tomorrow, so we spent some time studying for that as well. It seems like she is pretty comfortable with the material for both tests tomorrow.
