The student will take her Math state test this week. We went over some tests and worksheets she had done in class. She made a 100 on a major grade in math and a 90 on another math assignment. We did practice state exam questions from some worksheets she got at school and we worked a little out of a workbook. She did well.

The student's class has started covering volume and surface area of cylinders, cones, and pyramids. He understands the core concepts. The session was spent mostly covering chapter review from the book and looking over homework problems he had difficulty solving. Some of the challenging problems involved surface area and volume for a-typical shapes (ex. A hexagonal pyramid), so we both worked on the problems separately. This method is proving effective, because he can explain his problem-solving process, which has helped him to show his work with more detail.

Today we worked on the student's long term history project. We spent most of our time conducting online research. I encouraged him to try some of the data bases his school has access to instead of using a search engine for all research. We also reviewed some research-skills in terms of skimming long articles, and taking more notes during the research phase, so that he is well prepared for the upcoming writing phase.

We worked ahead in the student's class, and covered completing the square for quadratics and arithmetic with complex numbers. She picked up on the completing the square method and how it's used to get equations into vertex form. At the end of our session, we covered how completing the square is used to derive the quadratic equation. She is doing very well with all of the algebra concepts so far and picks up on new ideas easily.

Tutoring review by Abigail in Garden City, NY
The student and I started our session by doing a bit of review on comparative and superlative adjectives. We went over the results of her last quiz, and talked in detail about the questions that she got wrong, and how to find the correct answer. From there, we moved on to the next section--how to use comparatives and superlatives in sentences. As we were talking about this topic, it became clear to me that she was still feeling a bit shaky about noun-adjective agreement. We took a slight break from going through Section 2 to review some of the basics of noun-adjective agreement. When I felt that she had a more solid understanding of this topic, we continued on with the section. By the end of the session, I felt that she was ready to take her quiz.

Tutoring review by Michael in Garden City, NY
The student and I had a really good session where we covered a lot of material. He is taking two math courses, one in school and one out of school, so we got to cover content in both of those. For the course that he is taking out of school, we worked on the conversions between decimals, fractions, and percentages and finding certain percentages of numbers and what numbers are percentages of the whole numbers. In his school class, we were working with graphing inequalities and multi-step inequalities. He performed exceptionally well in both of these, only making a few mistakes due to moving too quickly. We worked more on testing strategies and really got a lot done. He really impressed me with the quality of his work and continues to excel!
