Tutoring review by Tessa in Des Moines, WA
Today I decided to challenge him. Normally he does well with information, but he can have a hard time staying focused on the more detailed tasks. I increased the skill level of vocabulary work to an early 6th grade level and showed him that he would be working on harder vocabulary although tasks would be the same. He did wonderfully and was excited to prove himself. He performed better on synonyms and antonyms than he has previously. He has also been showing improvement on recognizing words with two meanings and identifying the proper term (i.e. there, their, they're). He has also started to use the test-taking strategy of elimination. We played a vocabulary game today; however, if there are too many chances he will guess rather than consider the correct answer. When we read aloud, he does very well and barely hesitates on words he's never seen before. With this confidence, daily reading will significantly increase his vocabulary. As always, he performs extremely well on math. Today we worked on adding and subtracting fractions.

Yesterday, the student and I worked on his Science. He prepared to argue both sides for a debate on human cloning. We did research on the legal and ethical arguments. He also has a test on A Tale of Two Cities tomorrow which we reviewed for.

Tutoring review by Lyndsy in Des Moines, WA
In the past two weeks, I've had twos session with the student. Each time we focused on science and math. he nearly has completed his science study guide dealing with forces in motion. He has read each section from his textbook aloud to me and then completed the study guide examples or questions with guiding questions from me. In math, his class continues to work on graphing equations using the slope-intercept and point-slope methods. He also began studying using substitution with two equations and struggles a bit with it so we'll need more review. I showed him the multiple ways to manipulate an equation in order to help it fit into another one.

We reviewed for the student's final which is one week away. We really hit on how we can use T-charts to graph problems and see what our x and y points will be. We also went over some test taking strategies and what can be done when there are multiple choice answers and we are not completely positive how to solve the problem. I am trying to get her to see how she can solve problems when she is not sure of the answer and how process of elimination works.

We went over long vowels because of the silent e, and how e and a work together in spelling. He also did some problems in his math book.

Great first session! The student and I went "back to the beginning" to start to review the basics of intermediate algebra, including distributing, combining like terms, working with positives and negatives, and factoring difference of squares' polynomials. We talked about the importance of making sure you understand what operation is indicated before diving in and trying to start a problem, and how to determine the operation. He was focused and open to suggestions regarding different ways to deal with concepts. He is obviously very bright and more of a verbal/ auditory learner.
