Tutoring review by Madeleine in Milton, WA
The student had a worksheet on adding fractions. In school they are using fraction strips. In order to complete her assignment I showed her how to add by first finding a common denominator. With extra practice the student was catching on by the end of the hour.

The student and I went over some corrections from his last Algebra II, test as he had no Chemistry to work on. I was surprised to see that he was able to make corrections to most of the problems on his own. He really reflected a solid understanding of the subject matter. This makes me think that he may some issues not with the subject but with test taking. Next session, after we do work from his classes, I will go over some test-taking strategies with him to help him with future tests.

Tutoring review by Xiomara in Milton, WA
Today we covered Spanish pronouns in sentences, did a sheet, covered 70 vocabulary words, made a list of the struggling ones and gave him hints on remembering, and reviewed some practice exercises. The student seemed interested in the subjects and paid attention. I am going to email him several other exercises related to the subject and provide him with a link to some PowerPoint presentations for English grammar.

Tutoring review by Rachel in Milton, WA
The student had some homework to complete on the current material in his class: piecewise functions, solving quadratic functions, and absolute value functions. He did a good job with the review material on piecewise and quadratic functions, so the jump to absolute value functions didn't cause him much trouble. He was able to complete most of the problems on his own, and only a few problems required guidance. There was also some new material he needed to look over on root functions (y=x^(1/2)) that his class was beginning to learn, so we talked about those concepts briefly as well.

Tutoring review by Junior in Milton, WA
For our first session, we began with two important concepts: order of operations and solving linear equations with addition. Using the worksheets I prepared, the student practiced with evaluating numerical expressions using the rule for order of operations. He was familiar with the mnemonic algorithm, PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Add and Subtract). He was correct 90% of the time. The problem was when division came before multiplication or subtraction came before addition. I pointed out that in such cases, always work from left to right. We then practiced with addition in simple linear equations like x - 7 = -11. He did well on this. Then we moved to two step linear equations, he struggled a bit, but had 80% correct on 20 problems. Before his next session, I left him with a number of exercises on these two concepts.
