Tutoring review by Martin in Covington, VA
The student and I continued covering rational functions. In this session, we specifically covering rules and strategies for plotting them (asymptotic, roots, behavior in sections of the domain). We also covered some material from a previous test that she had gotten incorrect. She sometimes has trouble focusing but once we are able to flesh out a concept a few times, she is able to grasp it.

Today with the student I went over basic introductions with ratios and volumes again. Because I haven't had a tutoring session with her in 2 weeks, I went and reviewed some of the things we covered earlier. She is very good with math, but she struggles with new concepts. But, she still wants to learn how to do the math which is a good sign. I am going to email her some homework so she can work on that.

We continued with another standardized review exam; but this one was online. Some things I had to refresh her memory on, but all in all she did quite well for herself; she can sense it as well.

Tutoring review by Mohamed in Covington, VA
We continued working on sequences and geometric series solving applied problems. The student continues to improve in his learning. We had the opportunity to go over strategies in building geometric series from applied problems. I recommended that he reads the related chapter from the book I provided. The session went great and we plan to continue working on his packet on Thursday.

Tutoring review by Art in Covington, VA
We spent this session reviewing the chapter of his book for which he will be tested. The student was still very confident with his factoring and use of quadratic formula, but I found some very basic conceptual gaps in his understanding of quadratics from the sections before we had begun meeting. The sections that we covered were graphing, finding the axis of symmetry, finding the vertex, and graphing without making a x and y chart. He initially struggled with all of the topics, and it did not seem like he had really had a whole lot of experience with these topics. We were able to make some significant headway on these by relating all of these topics to the sessions we had previously had, specifically with the quadratic formula and factoring. I wrote out an example packet with step by step worked problems for him to review before his test, while he worked through the sections and I provided the necessary guidance. Sometimes the guidance was very hands on, but other times he was able to figure it out with just a few questions. The topic that he really struggled on, and which he required the most time on, was the axis of symmetry concept. I felt that he did very well on all of the topics that we reviewed. At the end of the lesson, I gave him a quadratic on which I asked him to find every single piece of information he could, without making an x/y chart. He was able to successfully make a full graph, with zeros, vertex, and y-intercept. I feel that he has the necessary skills and conceptual understanding to do very well on his next test, if he only reviews all of the notes, his books, and the materials I left him. The student had several light bulb moments when he realized how all of these topics are interconnected.
