Tutoring review by Katherine in Vinton, VA
Today we went over setting up linear equations to solve word problems. We also talked about domain and range, and the difference between inclusive and exclusive domain and ranges. The student was having a hard time with these but, once we went through a few together, they went a little better. She had some trouble finding the ordered pairs that represent different data points given in a problem, but we practiced this and she started to get it a little more.

Tutoring review by Jennifer in Vinton, VA
The student received an A on her report card in everything, including math. She did not have any homework, or exams coming up, but she did have some worksheets that she was allowed to turn in for some possible extra credit. She had started all of these worksheets on her own, and then completed them in our session. One of the worksheets involved multiple step word problems, using two or more operations. She did quite well on this worksheet, and was very good at picking out the relevant information that is needed in the question. She was also very good at recognizing which operation she needed to use, to solve the problem. The second worksheet involved sequences. The third worksheet involved finding the area and perimeter of compound shapes, with missing sides. It was an excellent sheet, with challenging questions, that she excelled in. I challenged her by asking her difficult questions. I asked her to find the perimeter of a square, given only its area. I also asked her to find the area of a rectangle, given only its perimeter and width. I used the remaining time to teach her about transformations, since geometry is the next unit that she is studying. We discussed what a translation, reflection, and rotation look like. I also gave her tracing paper and let her trace shapes and perform various transformations. She seemed to enjoy this type of kinesthetic learning.

We reviewed a homework assignment that explored the use of descriptive statistics. We also discussed a path forward given that the student wants to get back on track with the course. The first session went well. We ended the session with a good plan to resolve old work and a plan on how to get the student caught up with new material.

Tutoring review by Norhan in Vinton, VA
We initially started doing chemistry related to chemical and physical change, but the student felt comfortable with it to do it on his own. Instead we worked on geometry and identifying alternate interior/exterior angles, corresponding angles and consecutive interior angles. Next we worked on slope-intercept equations and point-slope equations. We identified what the variables m & b stand for and how to use coordinates to determine either equation. After that we did a review of perpendicular and parallel lines and graphed them for confirmation. He is much more comfortable with the material than last week and says he will be quizzed on it this week.
